Job description
Specialty Doctor in Geriatric Medicine

The closing date is 03 October 2025

The Older People0s Services Department forms part of the Medical Care Group comprising the following Directorates: Older People0s Services and Acute Medicine, Medical Specialities, Networked Medicine and Emergency Services.

The Directorate is led by the triad of Clinical Lead, General Manager and Matron and includes all 10 Older People0s Services wards and The Day Hospital which is based out of Christchurch Hospital. It currently has 34 consultants/specialists who are supported by a large team of junior doctors, Nurse practitioners and AHPs.

We believe our patients should be seen and assessed by a Geriatrician and the multi-disciplinary team within hours of arriving to the hospital. Our Frailty pathway enables us to identify frailty at the front door and provide the resource to get our patients home sooner. This means admissions from GP referrals and the Emergency department come straight to our Older Peoples admissions units. Once assessed, our patients will then move through our pathway to either short stay or complex care wards to continue their plan of care. Working together across the Older Persons Department is key to developing this vision. Our inpatient care facilitates safe discharge and is crucial to flow throughout the hospital.

Main duties of the job
  • Work alongside our existing specialty doctors and trainee Geriatric registrars to provide care to inpatients including new admissions
  • Supervision and support of junior medical colleagues, Physicians Associates and Advanced Nurse Practitioners/Advanced Clinical Practitioners
  • Attending ward multidisciplinary meetings
  • Attending and contributing to educational sessions and Clinical Governance meetings
  • Teaching Medical and Physicians Associates students
  • Participating in the hospital appraisal process as part of ongoing professional development
  • Potential weekend working within the ortho-geriatric service
