Job description
Overview

King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a full-time Specialty Dentist in Special Care Dentistry (replacement post) based at Kings College Hospital, Denmark Hill site. The role involves providing dental treatment under sedation (intravenous and inhalation sedation) or local anaesthesia, with treatment under general anaesthesia provided on a weekly basis. The post holder will support the GA service.

Main duties
  • Provide a high-quality care service to patients, including all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the Care Group.
  • Share responsibility for covering colleagues' periods of annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in the contract.
  • Contribute to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
  • Be committed to outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group's management team.
  • Contribute to audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes and Learning from Deaths.
  • Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
  • Foster and develop projects to maintain post-qualification professional education and relevant training.
  • Work with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure staff productivity and job satisfaction within the specialty.
  • Comply with all Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
About us

The Department of Community Special Care Dentistry forms part of the Dental Care Group of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and has been Consultant-led since 2002. The Department is commissioned by NHS England to provide special care and community dental services across multiple London boroughs, including special care dentistry within the Dental Hospital for medically complex patients and those requiring sedation or general anaesthesia. A mobile dental service for those experiencing homelessness operates across Lambeth & Southwark. The appointee will assess and treat urgent cardiac cases prior to surgery.

The postholder is a key employee whose role includes providing first-class healthcare and effective professional leadership to a diverse and committed workforce.

Job responsibilities

The post will be based at Kings College Hospital Denmark Hill site with potential treatment at Queen Marys Hospital in Sidcup. A definitive Job Plan will be agreed with the successful applicant.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • One or more of the following qualifications: MSc, FDS, MFDS, RCS, MSCD, DSCD, RCS (Eng), or equivalent
Training and Experience
  • Experience in the dental management of medically compromised patients
  • Contribution to guidelines or protocols for delivering oral healthcare to special care dentistry patients
  • Experience of providing dental treatment under general anaesthesia and appropriate conscious sedation techniques
Research and Publications
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports; experience of clinical research
Personal Skills and Attributes
  • Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and collaborate with dental, medical and paramedical staff; flexible to cover colleagues' absences
