Job description
Overview

We are seeking dedicated Specialist Screening Practitioners to join our team at the West London Bowel Cancer Screening Centre, based at Charing Cross Hospital. Our team is committed to delivering high-quality bowel cancer screening services across multiple sites. As a Specialist Screening Practitioner, you will play a crucial role in the coordination and provision of care to individuals participating in this national screening programme.

You will assess individuals during nurse-led clinics, make informed decisions based on your assessments, and plan the patient’s bowel cancer screening journey. You will advocate for each individual, providing vital information and support, and empower patients and their families to make informed decisions regarding their care, treatment, and future participation in the screening programme. You will also be involved in health promotion initiatives within the local community to encourage uptake and participation in the programme.

Comprehensive training, including Advanced Communication Skills training and the Specialist Bowel Cancer Screening Practitioner Module at Liverpool John Moores University, will be provided to support your development in this role.

Applicants are required to have a minimum of three years post-registration experience, including providing care to patients with complex needs.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with pre-assessment bookings and FIT clinics to ensure appointments occur within agreed time standards and according to protocol.
  • Conduct patient consultation and pre-assessment according to a nurse-led protocol to decide patient suitability for colonoscopy or radiological investigation and record information on the BCSS.
  • Conduct colonoscopy pre-assessment, obtain informed consent and prescribe bowel preparation under patient group directives.
  • Maintain effective links with the local Multidisciplinary Team to ensure timely presentation and transfer of patients, particularly regarding the faster diagnosis national target.
  • Be aware of targets set by the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and use available resources to achieve them.
  • Complete the Specialist Bowel Cancer Screening Practitioner module (Liverpool John Moores University) and an advanced communication course.
  • Maintain professional conduct, dress standards and confidentiality in line with NMC, Trust and medico-legal requirements.
  • Keep accurate records of the clinical service and ensure confidentiality and documentation compliance.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Essential – Registered Nurse and PIN number; evidence of continued personal and professional development.
  • Desirable – Module in Specialist Bowel Cancer Screening Practitioner Programme; Advanced Communication Course; Teaching and Assessing qualification or equivalent experience.
  • ExperienceEssential 3 years post-registration experience including care to patients with complex needs; some experience in an endoscopy unit or colorectal/oncology; experience working in a multidisciplinary team; ability to practice within the NMC code of conduct.
  • Desirable – experience as a Band 6; experience as a Specialist Screening Practitioner in the BCSP.
Skills and Abilities

  • Clear written and spoken communication for discussing sensitive information.
  • Ability to work under pressure; IT skills (email and standard office packages).
  • Knowledge of quality, standard setting, benchmarking and audit.
