Job summary

A national health service provider in Peterborough is seeking a Specialist Pharmacy Technician to lead the Pharmacy supply chain and stores services. The successful candidate will ensure uninterrupted and cost-effective medicine supply, manage a large team, and liaise closely with various stakeholders. Applicants must be registered pharmacy technicians and possess significant experience in medicine procurement and supply, along with strong communication skills and a commitment to professional development. This is a full-time permanent role requiring some weekend work.

Job description
Specialist Pharmacy Technician - Procurement - Peterborough

This is an exciting opportunity to join our well established, friendly, and productive Pharmacy Procurement & Supply Team. You will lead our Pharmacy supply chain and stores services at our Peterborough City Hospital site, making sure patients receive an uninterrupted and cost-effective medicines supply. You'll get to work closely with a large range of stakeholders from clinicians and pharmacists to suppliers and ICB partners. You'll also get to manage and develop a large team, efficaciously implement regional contracting, and oversee substantial medicine spending.

Excellent communication skills and enjoying working as part of a large multi-disciplinary team are essential. You will need to be affable, versatile, digitally literate, and be committed to continuous professional development.

This is a full-time permanent post, requiring occasional participation in the weekend rota.

Main duties of the job

Manage the local site delivery of pharmacy procurement and supply services ensuring an uninterrupted supply of cost-effective medicines within the Trust in liaison with the Purchasing & Logistics Manager

Ensure that all procurement for items for the Trust follows Trust formulary processes and Commercial Medicine Unit (CMU) contracts

Monitor future contract opportunities and maximise savings and limit financial losses to the Trust

Lead, manage, deliver, develop and evaluate site medicine supply services for purchasing and payment of medicines obtained through pharmacy stores

Negotiate with suppliers to obtain urgent medicines to meet unforeseen demands including investigating alternatives and relaying cost implications

Be responsible for developing and managing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for purchasing and supply on the site complying with Trust's Standing Financial Instructions, the Scheme of Delegation (SOD) and Wholesale Distribution requirements

Deputise for the Purchasing & Logistics Manager at departmental and regional meetings as appropriate

Manage the day to day work of the site procurement and supply technical team.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
  • NVQ 3 Pharmacy Services or National BTEc Certificate in Pharmaceutical Services or equivalent
  • Registration with General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • NVQ Assessor (A1 award level)
  • Project Management Training e.g. PRINCE 2
Knowledge and Experience
  • Proven background of experience in medicine procurement and supply
  • Significant post-qualification experience in hospital pharmacy
  • Proven experience in the delivery of pharmacy projects
  • Previous experience of managing and supervising staff
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy Computer Systems (training available)
  • Knowledge of requirements for maintaining confidentiality and accurate record keeping
