Overview
To provide high quality, safe midwifery care to women and their families with additional support requirements and mental health challenges in pregnancy and the postnatal period. The post holder will have a high level of relevant expert knowledge and skills, which they will use to manage, develop and lead care for pregnant women and new mothers with additional needs.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct client care and have detailed clinical knowledge of the specialist area.
- Be responsible for providing extra support and care to some pregnant women with mental health problems, in partnership with the named midwife, the specialist perinatal mental health team and external agencies.
- Work closely with women and their families to plan and coordinate their care based on their individual needs. Act as a link between the maternity service and other services involved in mental health care.
- Assist the band 7 specialist midwife to ensure that high standards of quality care are delivered and maintained.
- Deputise for the specialist midwife as required.
- Promote the use of quality improvement methods by frontline staff in order to deliver measurable improvements in patient care.
- Act as a resource of specialist knowledge to other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Act as a woman's advocate in promoting and delivering the highest standard of midwifery care, ensuring all fundamentals of care are addressed and policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Act as a source of specialist knowledge and clinical expertise to ensure that the care provided to the client group is appropriate and that there is early recognition of condition changes to ensure that appropriate management is identified and actioned.
- Ensure women and their families receive information in a sensitive way to enable them to make informed decisions about their care.
- Communicate all relevant information to the multi-disciplinary team, internally and with external organisations as required to ensure seamless care.
- Attend departmental and directorate meetings as required to understand developments in midwifery practice and perinatal mental health.
- Assist in maintaining an effective communication network; written, verbal and electronic, informing senior staff of all matters outside your role/sphere of competence and cascading information to junior staff.
- Develop and maintain communication with people about difficult matters or situations in an appropriate, supportive and empathic manner.
- Escalate according to policy to ensure appropriate delegation of women's care and workload.
- Contribute to ensuring that the team performs to high standards of care and maintains effective patient flow.
- Promote and collaborate in developing good working relationships with departments to ensure the client journey is effective and efficient.
- Identify gaps in service provision and, in agreement with the MDT, implement changes to improve service provision.
- Complete documentation on untoward incidents, produce reports as requested by line managers, and participate in clinical audit review.
- Contribute to clinical governance, quality initiatives, CQC and research and development initiatives.
- Investigate accidents, complaints, equipment defects, near misses and untoward incidents, and produce reports as requested by the line manager.
- Plan and manage own workload and that of the service flexibly to meet client needs.
- Collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team and other service providers to ensure care is women-centred, effective and efficient.
- Incorporate health education into women and midwife exchanges where possible.
- Be an effective role model for students and other staff; promote good working relationships and teamwork.
Midwifery Care and Practice
- Develop and implement programs of evidence-based care planning for the client group and their families.
- Ensure knowledge base is evidence-based and contemporary.
- Provide direct midwifery care in a variety of practice settings with detailed clinical knowledge of the specialist area.
- Undertake immediate assessment and determine priority of women within any setting; act as a resource for coordination and management of admission and discharge processes.
- Prepare accurate and concise reports, provide detailed and complex assessments and reports for social services and court proceedings, and work with safeguarding teams; may lead safeguarding for clients when required.
- Use evidence-based practice to assess physical, psychological and spiritual needs, create care plans, implement and evaluate midwifery care involving women and their families as appropriate.
- Provide a visible clinical profile with advisory and clinical input into patient care.
- Support the team in tackling health inequalities and social exclusion; ensure all records and documentation are accurate, legible and timely.
- Ensure practice meets the requirements of a practicing midwife in accordance with NMC requirements.
Governance, Safeguarding and Compliance
- Respect policy and legal frameworks at all times; knowledge of Nursing & Midwifery Code of Conduct, NMC adult/child protection protocols, MHA & MCA policies, risk assessment and Trust policies.
- Provide detailed and complex written or oral assessments for social services and the family court process; work with safeguarding teams.
- Comply with safeguarding for children and vulnerable adults; maintain confidentiality and data quality; comply with codes of conduct and accountability.
- Ensure documentation is appropriate, accountable and defensible; disseminate changes in client condition to the MDT.
- Plan and manage workload; support the team to improve health outcomes and ensure safe patient flow.
- Contribute to audit, clinical governance, CNST and research and development initiatives.
Training, Professional Development and Staff
- Act as a resource of specialist knowledge and be involved in staff training in the specialist area; managers are responsible for their own and their staff's development.
- Attend mandatory training and support induction and preceptorship for new staff; provide mentoring and supervision for learners and junior staff.
- Oversee midwifery care provision and contribute to an effective learning environment for all staff.
- Demonstrate responsibility for information resources; write reports, maintain care plans, and ensure data quality and timely completion of records.
Qualifications and Experience
- Qualifications and experience in midwifery with ability to provide direct midwifery care and coordinate admission and discharge in maternity settings.
- Experience in perinatal mental health and multidisciplinary team collaboration.
