Overview

Are you an experienced, skilled and compassionate nurse, looking for an opportunity to take on a more senior role? An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Ward 7B, the Department of Medicine for Older People, a general medical ward specialising in older people with 27 beds in total. We are looking to recruit an experienced nurse to join our senior team within a well-established and committed multi-disciplinary team. Do you have an interest in quality improvement and a desire to deliver, and support others to deliver excellent standards of care and experience for patients and their families? Do you enjoy supporting others to learn and develop, instilling a culture of continual professional development and learning, clinical excellence, care and kindness? We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, motivated, experienced nurse who can demonstrate commitment to the provision of high-quality person-centred care. The post holder is required to be an exemplary role model and senior member of the team, demonstrating good organisational, managerial and leadership skills within the acute setting.

Responsibilities
  • All Band 6 Charge Nurses are to assume responsibility for a specified area/areas of practice and will feed back to the Senior Charge Nurse/ Matron at meetings or as required, ensuring the continued development of clinical practice within the Unit.

Clinical Management
  • Provide senior nursing advice and support to facilitate high quality, individualised care in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Manage and coordinate complex clinical situations and take appropriate action in emergencies.
  • Be clinically competent in the use of specialised equipment in varied settings.
  • Act as a clinical role model and leader for all staff, providing daily unit management and a high standard of nursing care.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care with evidence-based practice to improve quality of care; consider holistic patient needs.
  • Contribute to setting and monitoring nursing care standards; liaise with medical staff and other disciplines; ensure care aligns with professional practice and conduct codes.
  • Promote patient and relative involvement in care management and evaluation.
  • Maintain safe drug custody and ensure medication procedures meet statutory and trust requirements.
  • Undertake appropriate training to expand clinical skills; manage safe staffing levels and escalation of risks per Trust policy.
People Management
  • Assess and develop action plans for individual development needs.
  • Participate in orientation and monitor staff performance; support revalidation processes.
  • Deploy staffing resources effectively; support team development and staff welfare.
  • Assist in selection, appointment and induction of new staff; ensure staffing levels match workload and patient needs.
  • Coordinate and monitor off duty, annual leave, sickness and absence.
Leadership Development
  • Promote a learning environment; participate in staff education and development and act as mentor for learners and teams.
  • Contribute to a positive learning environment for colleagues, patients and visitors.
  • Assess learning needs and support specialty-based teaching; ensure objectives are achieved.
  • Maintain personal development for revalidation; oversee continuing professional development of staff delegated by Charge Nurse or Senior Sister.
  • Supervise junior nurses, students and HCAs to maintain high standards of care; share specialist knowledge within the Trust.
Budget and Audit
  • Ensure effective use of resources including stock management and equipment care.
  • Handle patients’ valuables safely; authorise timesheets for temporary staff as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement nursing practice audits; promote awareness of current nursing research; apply findings to practice.
  • Promote dissemination of local/national/international research and identify areas for local audit.
Personal Development

Responsible for ongoing professional development and contributing to knowledge development reviews; maintain a professional portfolio and reflective diary for revalidation.
