Overview

Our Day Surgery Unit reopened in April 2022 following 2 years of redeployment due to COVID. We have now reached 40% utilisation. We have surgeons and patients queuing to reopen all our lists but we can’t do it without you.

We are looking for band 5 and 6 nurses and ODPs with varying experience in either anaesthetics and/or scrub.

Please read the job spec before applying. You must have full registration with NMC or HCPC. Applicants who do not have full registration will be rejected.

This is a Consultant delivered service. We offer a variety of specialties Ophthalmology, OMFS, Digestive Diseases, Vascular, Gynaecology and Urology.

We operate Monday to Friday.

Main duties of the job

Band 6 Senior Scrub Nurse/ODP – Day Surgery Unit – Lewes Victoria Hospital

A vacancy has arisen for a highly skilled and experienced Band 6 Senior Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner with a broad clinical background and demonstrable management skills.

You will need to be an experienced anaesthetic / scrub practitioner who is proactive, self-motivated, has very strong interpersonal skills, and a vision for service improvement. You will be expected to actively support, coordinate and assist in the management and delivery of high quality care to patients during the Peri-operative phase of their care.

You will have a minimum of 1 year’s experience and an anaesthetic qualification. You will be expected to support the following areas: anaesthetics, scrub, recovery, Pre-Operative Assessment and the Day Surgery ward. You will be an experienced mentor with skills and knowledge to support learners in the work place including trainee nurses, ODPs and paramedics.

Essential are a sense of humour, the ability to inspire staff and a proven record of successfully implementing change.

The Unit covers a variety of specialties including Gynaecology, Urology, OMFS, Digestive Diseases, Vascular and Ophthalmology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  1. Assist and support the Unit Manager in the effective management of the department in accordance with the Trusts Personnel Policies and procedures.
  2. Deputise for the Unit Manager when required.
  3. Co-ordinate daily departmental clinical activities and maximise department resource potential.
  4. Ensure that accurate records and information systems are maintained.
  5. Ensure the safe control, custody and administration of all drugs within the peri-operative area in accordance with Trust Policies and national legislation.
  6. Inform Unit Manager if there is a change in circumstance, which may affect safe and competent practice.
  7. Support and participate in management initiatives as appropriate.
  8. Assist the Unit Manager to actively lead in the development of their specialised areas within the peri-operative services and take responsibility for managing an area of specialised practice.
  9. Assist the Unit Manager to ensure all staff attend mandatory training sessions as required.
  10. Assist the Unit Manager to effectively motivate a competent workforce, facilitate and plan the delivery of high quality patient care and to provide a safe environment for the patient at all times.
  11. Deputise for the Unit Manager by planning and organising the clinical activity on a regular basis with responsibility for the day-to-day management of a group of staff and speciality, and prioritise and plan (elective and emergency) patient care within the environment on a daily basis.
  12. Be able to demonstrate relevant IT and keyboard skills to enable electronic data collection and communication.
