Job description
Overview

We're looking for an experienced Mechanical Technician to join our Estates Team at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital. Estates plays a crucial role in keeping our hospitals and services running. From essential power, heating, plumbing and mechanical systems to the inside and outside of our buildings and grounds, Estates staff make sure these are safe and well-maintained for our patients, visitors, and other staff. Our staff have a wide range of expertise and skills – from construction trades and technical skills, building and site management, surveying, and more. Together they carry out vital inspections, maintenance, and repairs across our sites so that we can keep giving excellent care to our patients.

Responsibilities
  • Day-to-day management, administration and workload of operational and reactive engineering staff within Estates.
  • Manage and supervise external engineering contractors to ensure works are completed on time and to agreed standards.
  • Carrying out the full range of maintenance duties specific to core trade, including non-routine, planned, corrective and breakdown maintenance tasks.
  • Developing task lists and carrying out regular audits.
  • Attending and advising Trust-wide Steering Groups relating to expertise and ensuring implementation.
  • Undertaking regular Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and testing of Mechanical systems.
  • Recording and analysing results with reference to historical data and determining appropriate actions and providing condition and non‑compliance reports as necessary.
  • Witnessing the testing of new systems, plant and equipment installed on Trust property.
  • Reconfirming correct operation on a regular basis and providing appropriate training to other Estates staff and users.
  • Being available for on‑call and out‑of‑hours cover with availability to be on‑site within 30 minutes of a call (with additional out‑of‑hours pay).
  • Carrying a Trust mobile phone for this purpose and working under own initiative with freedom to make decisions.
Qualifications and Requirements

Highly experienced within trade, with management, people and communication skills needed to lead an effective team.

This is a full‑time position, with typical hours of 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday. There is plenty of opportunity for training and development, including learning skills outside of your core trade (City and Guilds NVQ), training for Authorised Person (AP) status.
