Overview
University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is seeking a Senior Management Accountant to use finance skills to improve healthcare services. You will be part of the Management Accounts Team, providing a high quality accounting and financial advice service to a Care Group which may consist of a significant number of clinical service areas. The role is rewarding and challenging, requiring financial and analytical expertise supported by excellent communication and organisational skills.
The successful candidate should be a qualified Accountant (or training towards) with demonstrable experience in a management accounting environment. Proven knowledge of the NHS would be an advantage. The department offers hybrid and flexible working arrangements.

Responsibilities
- Provide the lead accounting expertise and financial analysis to a Care Group and Operational teams within them.
- Utilise specialist knowledge of complex NHS/Trust accounting systems, processes, regulations, financial techniques and relevant legislation for individual Service lines.
- Provide a comprehensive and high standard of management accounting service to Operational Managers, Clinical Directors, Budget Holders and Support Managers within their Service Lines and Care Groups/Operational Teams to support patient care and balance Trust financial objectives.
- Lead the management accounting reporting for the Care Group to the Care Group Finance Business Partner, ensuring monthly reports and forecasts are completed.
- Apply best accounting practices to ensure an accurate representation of Service Line financial performance.
- Use persuasion, motivation and negotiation skills to influence Service Line Budget Holders to support cost-effective decision making.
- Lead the budget setting process for Service Lines to ensure budgets reflect the resources required to deliver services.
- Provide financial support for complex business cases, describing financial implications and investment appraisal techniques as appropriate.
- Use the Trust accounting packages to a high standard to maximise information availability to Service Lines and the Trust.
- Analyse variances by comparing actual income and expenditure to budget and/or trend analyses, considering activity and income/expenditure interactions and highlight areas of concern.
- Benchmark information internally or with other NHS organisations.
- Provide specialist financial advice by developing expert knowledge relating to the supported service area, including contracts and pricing where applicable.
- Ensure service areas receive all income due through correct recording, reporting, and reconciliation of activity performed/services delivered.
- Collate cost pressures and other service changes and ensure cost allocations used by the Team Costing reflect true costs where possible.
- Work with the Finance Business Partners to understand activity changes’ impact on the plan, expenditure and forecasts.
- Collaborate with relevant Managers to generate accurate financial forecasts for Service Lines, forecasting activity levels, contract income, expenditure and non-contract income.
- Support Care Groups with identification, implementation and monitoring of Financial Improvement Plans; production and delivery of these plans will be key to the Trust’s financial viability and progress reported to the Trust Board.
- Lead the training of Service Line Management Teams in all aspects of financial management and develop their financial abilities through formal and informal training, fostering financial awareness among Care Group leaders and Service Line Cluster teams.
