Job summary

A local authority legal firm in East London is seeking an experienced Governance Lawyer to advise on complex constitutional and governance issues. This role involves supporting the Monitoring Officer, ensuring transparency in decision-making, and providing legal insight. Applicants must be qualified solicitors or barristers with strong knowledge of local government law. This is a 3-month contract with a pay rate of £45-£55 per hour.

Role

Senior Governance Lawyer

Location

Rate

45-55ph LTD (48.46ph PAYE inc. holiday pay, 43.24ph PAYE exc. Holiday pay)

Contract

3 months with possibility of extension, 36 hours per week

Responsibilities
  • Advise council officers, Cabinet Members, committees, and elected members on governance and constitutional matters.
  • Support the Monitoring Officer and Deputy Monitoring Officer with statutory responsibilities.
  • Provide legal insight on FOI, subject access requests, and regulatory complaints.
  • Ensure decision-making meets the highest standards of transparency and good governance.
Qualifications
  • Qualified solicitor, barrister, or chartered legal executive.
  • Strong knowledge of local government law and governance frameworks.
  • Experience supporting Monitoring Officers with statutory duties.
  • Excellent problem-solving, risk management, and communication skills.
