Job description
Job Description

The Times and The Sunday Times represent a combined 400 years of covering news and providing comment and analysis on the UK and the world. We are authoritative, credible, responsible, trusted and a part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Your Team

The Times Editorial Data team sits at the crossroads of data and content, helping readers connect with the journalism they value most. We partner closely with the Times Audience team to understand what drives engagement and how best to deliver impactful stories.

Your Role

We’re looking for a Senior Editorial Analyst to join the team, reporting to the Head of Editorial Data. This is an embedded role in the newsroom, working across The Times and The Sunday Times. You combine technical expertise in data analysis with editorial awareness and strategic thinking. You know how to query and structure large datasets, build reporting tools that scale, and turn findings into insights that shape commissioning, framing and promotion. You guide projects, mentor colleagues and champion best practice in analytics. You help make data part of the newsroom’s daily rhythm, increasing the reach and impact of our journalism.

Day to day you will:
Technical & Analytical
  • Build analyses from the ground up: query, clean and interpret complex datasets.
  • Lead all phases of analytic work — defining problems, gathering data, analysing results, and representing findings.
  • Design, build and maintain data tables, dashboards and automated reports that support newsroom decision-making.
  • Structure datasets and create intuitive visualisations that make data accessible across the newsroom.
  • Collaborate with data engineering to improve data quality, enrich metadata and develop new datasets for analysis.
Insight & Strategy
  • Run deep dives into audience behaviour, content performance and engagement patterns to uncover trends and growth opportunities.
  • Translate findings into clear, editorially relevant recommendations that influence how we commission, frame and distribute stories.
  • Partner with editorial, product and marketing teams to test and measure content features, formats and promotion strategies.
  • Write narrative-driven performance reports that explain not just what happened but why — and what to do next.
  • Present insights to editors, journalists and senior leadership in clear, persuasive language.
  • Teach editors, reporters and others in the newsroom how to use tools and think critically about audience data.
  • Build confidence in data by ensuring reliability, clarity and transparency.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and smarter measurement across the newsroom.
What we’re looking for from you:
  • Experience working with data analytics or data science teams to deliver reporting and analysis.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL, with hands‑on experience working with large datasets.
  • Experience designing dashboards, reports and workflows, using tools such as Google Data Studio or Tableau.
  • Ability to communicate cross‑functionally – written, visually, and verbally – to present key insights to team members, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for journalism, current affairs and the public mission of The Times and The Sunday Times.
Ideally, you also have:
  • Experience working in a newsroom or editorial analytics environment.
  • Familiarity with digital publishing metrics and strategies for audience growth.
  • Knowledge of audience and web analytics tools (Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics, Parse.ly, Chartbeat).

If you don’t meet every requirement but believe you have the skills, curiosity and drive to succeed in this role, we’d love to hear from you.
