The role focuses on providing care for a variety of oesophago-gastric conditions, performing laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgeries, and engaging in complex hernia management. Applicants should be prepared for hands-on experience with emergency presentations and contribute to multidisciplinary meetings. This position emphasizes patient care, teamwork, and innovation in a supportive environment.
The Upper GI Unit provides care for people with a wide range of benign and malignant oesophago-gastric conditions. The unit performs a high volume of benign UGI procedures, including anti-reflux surgery, revisional anti-reflux surgery, large para-oesophageal hernia repair, treatment of achalasia (surgical and POEM) and provides an acute biliary service for people with complications of gallstones. Fellows will also gain exposure to a broad range of emergency UGI presentations such as oesophageal perforation and incarcerated hiatal hernias. The Abdominal Wall Reconstruction (AWR) and Complex Hernia Unit is a well-recognised tertiary referral centre managing a wide spectrum of hernia disease, ranging from primary and recurrent inguinal and ventral hernias to complex tertiary referrals such as loss of domain, infected mesh, giant incisional hernias, parastomal hernias, and multi-specialty joint cases. The unit has significant expertise in both open and minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic and hybrid approaches. Fellows will gain exposure to high-volume, complex hernia surgery, joint operating with plastic surgery, and the full pathway of patient management from outpatient referral to advanced operative intervention.
