Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery

Department: Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, Evelina London Children’s Hospital — tertiary Children’s Orthopaedic Service for South London and surrounding counties. The fellowship attracts Royal College and PMETB training approval and has specialist tertiary services including hip problems in teenagers, paediatric knee injuries, limb deformity, skeletal dysplasia, spina bifida and extensive neurodisability services with gait laboratory support.

Main duties

The postholder will, under the supervision of relevant consultants, be responsible for the provision of orthopaedic services to Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital Trust. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing skills in the assessment and management of orthopaedic patients in acute and elective paediatric settings.
  • Enhancing practical skills in children’s orthopaedic surgery.
  • Gaining understanding of 3-dimensional gait analysis and its contributions to clinical decision making, prognosis and research.
  • Undertaking theatre lists and outpatient clinics with or without supervision.
  • Understanding and appreciating the contributions of multidisciplinary teams in paediatric orthopaedic care, sensitive to patient and family needs.

Job responsibilities

You will join a team of consultants, specialist registrars and specialist orthopaedic nurses and will provide elective orthopaedic and trauma services in conjunction with colleagues. You will participate in clinical and other service activities to ensure high-quality patient care, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and contribute to service management and development. The department supports development of your clinical interests with a flexible approach.

This is a non-on-call post but you will liaise with the trauma team to coordinate cover for internal and regional referrals during weekdays (08:00–17:00). Some staff may be asked to work flexible hours to extend services into evenings or weekends. The fellowship length listed is 7 months.

This is the tertiary Children’s Orthopaedic Service for South London and surrounding counties, with Royal College and PMETB training approval for fellowships such as this. The fellowship is from the beginning of January 2026 for 7 months at Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Current consultant staff include:

  • Martin Gough – Orthopaedic Surgeon, Lead for Neurodisability and Gait Lab
  • Michail Kokkinakis – Orthopaedic Surgeon, Lead for Adolescent Hip Preservation Surgery
  • Daniel Reed – Head of Service, Lead for Paediatric and Adolescent Knee Surgery
  • Gavin Spence – Orthopaedic Surgeon, Lead for Limb Reconstruction

The successful candidate will be accountable to Mr Michail Kokkinakis as educational supervisor and medical appraiser for the post.

Qualifications and Training
  • Full GMC Registration and licence to practise
  • FRCS(Tr & Ortho) or equivalent
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Nodal point 5 criteria: 7 completed years of postgraduate clinical experience (ST6 minimum) or equivalent if overseas; OR Post CCT
Clinical Experience
  • Extensive clinical experience in orthopaedic surgery
  • Previous experience in paediatric orthopaedic surgery
  • Documentation of paediatric orthopaedic operative experience
  • Experience in paediatric orthopaedics in a specialist children’s hospital
  • Previous fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic surgery
Knowledge and Skills
