Senior Clinical Fellow in Obstetric Anaesthesia

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced anaesthetist who has interest and aptitude in obstetric anaesthesia. The post is suitable for an ST4+ level trainee or a candidate with equivalent anaesthesia experience and clinical competencies. Applicants must have completed Stage 1 training and the Primary FRCA examination (or equivalent overseas qualification) and must be competent in independently inserting neuraxial spinal and epidural blocks for both labour analgesia and for operative procedures. The successful candidate must also be able to confidently manage a busy labour ward out of hours, and be able to provide initial management and resuscitation for all obstetric emergencies such as category one caesarean section, major obstetric haemorrhage, severe pre-eclampsia among others.

Main duties of the job

This is a six month post initially, with a possibility to extend to 12 months. The post holder would join a busy department managing a large volume of high-risk pregnancies. There is scope for moulding the position to a degree to match the particular interests and needs of the successful applicant.

Job responsibilities

Clinical duties will be based on labour ward, and on anaesthetic lists within the hospital. There will be a 1:8 on-call commitment on the obstetric rota. Fellows will be offered dedicated time away from clinical work to facilitate projects and teaching during the fellowship period. Support will be provided as required in terms of portfolio development, interview and exam preparation, quality improvement projects, as well as career advice and guidance.
