These posts are central to delivering effective patient care at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and form part of our strategy to expand the delivery of our national peritoneal malignancy program. The post will be based in Basingstoke Critical Care Units and will involve working a full on-call pattern within Basingstoke Critical Care with opportunity to develop additional skills in Anaesthetics as agreed with the Critical Care Department.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Hold one of 8 posts covering a 24/7 rota in Critical Care, with a bespoke rota design (DB rotas) that allows requests around leave and prior commitments.
  • Be part of the Senior Critical Care rota overseeing emergency admissions from the wards, the Emergency Department, Theatres and the Cath Lab.
  • Participate in ICU handover, regular ICU ward rounds, and invasive procedures on ICU.
  • Undertake quality improvement work and contribute to the educational program for the junior medical team.
  • Out-of-hours support provided by a consultant in intensive care and a consultant general anaesthetist, both non-resident.
Opportunities and Education
  • Educational opportunities include gaining anaesthetic and airway management skills to aid transition to a career in Anaesthesia.
  • Develop POCUS (point-of-care ultrasound) skills.
  • Potential to undertake research into major surgical perioperative care in conjunction with the Peritoneal Malignancy Institute.
  • Possible opportunities across surgical disciplines for further anaesthetic skills (General Surgery, Peritoneal Malignancy, Urology, ENT, O&G, Paediatrics, Trauma & Orthopaedics).
Clinical Setting and Service

We have 18 Critical Care beds across 2 units (CCA and CCB) supporting a 24-hour PCI service and the largest cytoreductive surgical program in the UK for primary colorectal and appendix tumours, including Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (over 300 patients annually).

Our three sites are: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, and Andover War Memorial Hospital. Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of approximately 600,000 people.
