SEN Learning Support Assistant (Permanent)

About the role

TeacherActive is seeking a dedicated and proactive SEN Learning Support Assistant to join a thriving school in Chelmsford on a permanent basis. You will work closely with the inclusion team to support pupils with a range of special educational needs, including complex needs, autism, and other cognition and learning difficulties. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Key responsibilities
  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEN, ensuring their academic and social needs are met
  • Adapt and differentiate learning activities under the direction of teachers and SENCo
  • Support assessment, monitoring, and documentation of pupil progress
  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing using evidence-based strategies
  • Help with personal care and mobility needs where required (training provided)
  • Encourage independence, self-advocacy, and inclusion in classroom activities
  • Support transition plans and liaise with parents, carers, and external professionals
  • Assist with classroom management and create a positive, safe learning environment
  • Contribute to safeguarding and welfare protocols and maintain accurate records
Candidate requirements
  • Genuine passion for supporting children with SEND
  • Prior experience working with children or young people in an educational or care setting (school-based preferred)
  • Understanding of different SEN needs and approaches to support
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience; excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work across year groups or with varying needs
  • Commitment to safeguarding and equal opportunities
  • An Enhanced DBS check on the update service (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2/3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, CACHE qualifications, or equivalent) are advantageous but not always essential

Hours and location

Full-time position (typical school hours, Monday to Friday, term-time with potential for occasional after-school or prep duties)
