Job description
Class Teacher – Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)

Location: Bordon, Hampshire (Hollywater area) Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday (term time, plus inset days)

A warm, inclusive, and child-centred school in the Hollywater area of Bordon is seeking a Class Teacher to lead a class of pupils with severe learning difficulties (SLD) and attachment-related needs.

The school supports children with complex learning profiles, including significant cognitive delays, communication needs, autism, sensory processing differences, and social, emotional, and attachment difficulties. Pupils benefit from a highly structured, nurturing environment where relationships, consistency, and emotional safety are central to learning.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for a small class of pupils who require high levels of support, routine, and emotional regulation. Teaching focuses on personalised learning, communication, life skills, and emotional development, alongside academic progress appropriate to each child’s stage of development.

This role is suited to a teacher who is patient, reflective, and committed to trauma-informed and relationship-based practice. The school welcomes applications from teachers with experience in special education, early years, primary, or alternative provision, as well as from those looking to develop their skills within a specialist setting.

Key responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver highly personalised learning tailored to pupils with SLD and attachment needs
  • Create a calm, predictable, and emotionally safe classroom environment
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils through consistent and nurturing practice
  • Support pupils with communication, sensory regulation, and emotional development
  • Work closely with Learning Support Assistants to ensure effective classroom support
  • Use assessment and observation to track progress and adapt teaching approaches
  • Collaborate with SEN staff, therapists, and external professionals
  • Communicate effectively with families and contribute to reviews and reports
  • Uphold safeguarding, wellbeing, and inclusive practice at all times
Desired qualities
  • Committed to supporting pupils with complex and additional needs
  • Understands or is willing to develop knowledge of attachment and trauma-informed practice
  • Can remain calm, flexible, and reflective in challenging situations
  • Values teamwork and collaborative working
  • Is resilient, compassionate, and child-focused

Experience working with pupils with SLD, autism, or attachment difficulties is highly desirable, but the school also welcomes applications from teachers with transferable skills and a strong desire to learn.

This role is subject to safeguarding requirements, including an enhanced DBS check. The school is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion and welcomes applications from candidates from all backgrounds.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. The advert is for a temporary position; in some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
