Second Engineer (watch keeper) for cruise vessel Crystal Symphony on contract. Location: Shipboard. Start: 17/October/2025. Contract: 12 weeks on/off. Requires valid certificates and good references/recommendations.
Description
We are looking for a Second Engineer (watch keeper) for cruise vessel Crystal Symphony, ready to join on 17/October/2025, contract 12 weeks on/off. Requires experienced candidates with all valid certificates and good references/recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe engine room watch while at sea, at anchor and in port in accordance with Company Policies, applicable National/International standards and prescribed regulations.
- Execute safe and efficient performance of Main and Auxiliary engines.
- Lead safe operations of machinery and equipment, monitoring engine control systems in the engine room.
- Perform repair and maintenance work inside and outside the Engine Room, oversee maintenance in accordance with Company Policies and compliance with Public Health and other regulations.
- Coordinate with different technical parties and departments.
Reporting Structure
- Report to the Staff Engineer.
Safety Duties
- Participate in crew safety drills according to instructions.
- Comply with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
- Lead by example in Health and Safety of self and others.
- Ensure proper use of work equipment, PPE, chemicals and safety devices; provide training, guidance and supervision as necessary.
Education/Experience/Qualifications
- Valid STCW95 certification.
- Valid CoC A-III/2.
- Appropriate certification as required by regulations.
- Extensive experience in subordinate positions on board passenger ships in a similar role; preferably with Wartsila engines.
- Physically and medically fit; moral integrity.
- Public Health, Sanitation and Environmental training courses are appreciated.
- Proficient in reading and understanding technical drawings and manuals.
- Alaska experience is a plus.
- Public Health, Coast Guard and Port State Control experience is recommended.
Languages & Computer Knowledge
Language requirements: Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board; ability to give/receive instructions in verbal and written forms and engage with guests and crew. Additional languages are beneficial.
Computer knowledge: Proficient with AMOS and Microsoft applications.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
Stand, walk long distances, reach and sit. Repetitive bending, climbing stairs and ladders. Lift or push up to 50 lbs. Overtime and irregular schedules. Work in Engine Control Room/engine spaces with noise and distraction.

Operational & Compliance
- Officer status; salary and rotation refer to contract.
- Act as Chief Engineer’s representative during Engine Room watch; supervise on-watch team; conduct rounds and observe/report malfunctions; follow emergency procedures.
- Operate and maintain Main and Auxiliary engines; execute maintenance, operation and repairs in the Engine Room.
- Know vessel handling characteristics, stopping distances and safety features; be fully conversant with Company VMS.
- Ensure seaworthiness of the vessel in the engine department; manage spare parts and consumables stock on board.
- Delegate work to Oilers and Wipers; be familiar with lifesaving, firefighting and pollution prevention equipment.
- Maintain engine logs, including Oil Record Book, Waste Water discharge, Oil to Sea interfaces, Marine Fuel Sulphur, etc.
- Monitor subordinates’ hours and overtime; ensure 100% compliance with Company, ILO/MLC requirements.
- Ensure engine room operations comply with ISM, ISPS, SOLAS, Safe Working Practices, MARPOL, Pollution prevention, STCW, Ballast Water Management, US CDC Vessel Sanitation Program, and Bahamas Merchant Shipping regulations.
- Lead, train and develop subordinates; enforce uniform and grooming standards; maintain proper conduct within Engine Department and with other departments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
