We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Scrap Buyer II to support our procurement operations and help drive our mission of responsible sourcing.

Job Summary:

The position is primarily responsible for the procurement of retail scrap suitable for steelmaking. Under the immediate direction of the Scrap Buyer Manager, the incumbent will execute the approved plan to achieve the objective of minimizing overall cost while maximizing return for operations.

Nature and Scope:

This position is responsible for the economic and efficient procurement of retail scrap. The incumbent will establish and maintain effective relationships with suppliers, including active solicitation of new sources within the assigned region. The supplier base includes established accounts, casual peddlers, auto wreckers, and other generators of scrap metal.

The position reports directly to the Regional Raw Materials Manager and has a functional reporting relationship to the local Division Manager. The incumbent will coordinate activities with transportation, scrap inspection, accounting personnel, and other relevant staff.

The incumbent must be a self-starter with the ability to initiate business and must possess strong negotiating, communication, math and problem-solving skills. Candidates must function effectively both independently and as a member of a cross-functional team. High ethical standards and a strong work ethic are key attributes. Incumbents will support commercial practices based on established policies to ensure fair, ethical and productive relationships with suppliers. This position requires regular weekly travel local to complete job duties and maintain an effective network of vendors, mill personnel, and industry organizations. Occasionally it will require overnight travel.

The incumbent’s primary responsibility is the cost-effective procurement of scrap. The Incumbent must stay abreast of current market trends and be aware of regional scrap markets and competitive situations/practices. Requires utilizing a network of sources to understand market activity and determine the needs of the mill/s supplied. The incumbent will procure scrap based on the specific terms of purchase contracts within established policies and procedures, reviews and/or approves the incoming invoices and document vendor performance. This position also serves as a liaison between Yard personnel and scrap suppliers. This position will provide commercial information used in analyzing inventory requirements

As required, the incumbent will inspect and address scrap quality issues that arise at the Yard site. May be required to educate and communicate specifications, commercial terms/conditions, and safety and environmental compliance requirements to vendors, shippers, and inspection personnel.

Incumbent must be knowledgeable in the computer systems and procedures used to receive, handle and pay for scrap throughout the Company and assist in resolving any problems that may arise with vendors. The candidate must actively coordinate any such issues with appropriate administrative and accounting personnel.

Principal Accountabilities:
  • Recruit new scrap supply sources in the regional market.
  • Procure scrap metals in a cost-effective manner.
  • Maintain strong relationships with current suppliers and identify new sources to meet procurement goals.
  • Support ethical and productive commercial practices.
  • Monitor market trends and competitive practices to meet operational needs.
  • Provide insights to management and transportation teams to identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Act as a liaison between plant management and scrap suppliers.
  • Review weekly scrap order shipment status and adjust as needed to ensure timely delivery and correct order application.
  • Resolve discrepancies related to grading, weight settlement, and order application tactfully to maintain vendor relationships.
  • Educate vendors and plant personnel on specifications, commercial terms, and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain proficiency in procurement systems and company scrap information platforms.
