About the job?

In this role you will be responsible for providing independent occupational safety advice and guidance to all functions within GWR.

You will assist other functions with the practical application of safety legislation and industry standards, as well as managing the review of change proposals to mitigate safety risk, ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation and GWR\'s Integrated Management System.

In this role you will work collaboratively with the safety team, undertaking audits where required as well as assisting with the implementation, development and improvement to the company\'s Integrated Management System, reducing potential risk exposure.

Responsibilities
  • Safety Procedure Management: Develop, review and maintain safety management procedures in line with legislation, industry standards and best practices. Ensure managers understand and implement their responsibilities.
  • Incident Investigation & Analysis: Support investigations into major incidents, injuries and occupational ill health. Identify root causes, recommend corrective actions and monitor trends to prevent recurrence.
  • Accident & Safety Improvement Oversight: Review daily accident logs, support managers in accident investigations and assist in developing local safety improvement plans.
  • Change Management: Manage and validate safety-related change proposals, ensuring compliance with safety legislation and internal procedures. Maintain the Safety Management of Change tracker and report updates to senior management.
  • Audit & Compliance: Conduct verification audits to ensure compliance with the Integrated Management System. Monitor implementation of risk controls and corrective actions and provide feedback to managers.
  • Risk Assessment Support: Facilitate and support risk assessment workshops, consult with managers and safety reps and ensure high-risk actions are tracked and addressed.
  • Occupational Health Support: Assist line managers with occupational health risk assessments and workplace adjustments following referrals.
  • Safety Campaigns & Training: Contribute to the planning and delivery of safety campaigns, PGI training and Health & Safety Representative Engagement Workshops. Evaluate campaign effectiveness.
  • Security & Fire Safety: Support development of personal security plans and assist with fire safety responsibilities including reviewing fire risk assessments.
  • Collaborative Working: Attend regional Health Safety Security & Environment Committees, ensure adherence to collaborative working procedures with Health & Safety Representatives and support cross-functional safety initiatives.
  • Policy & Procedure Compliance: Provide guidance on and ensure compliance with key safety procedures including risk strategy, manual handling, working at height, stress management, CoSHH, contractor control and accident reporting.
  • Cross-Team Support: Collaborate with other Safety Managers to balance workload and support regional safety needs.

In addition, you will?

  • Represent the Safety Team at the On Train Safety Improvement Group, and provide cover at Stations/Drivers SIGs as required.
  • Create, develop and deliver a monthly local Stations and On Train Safety Performance Review process, to be held with Line Managers, improving the level of engagement and providing professional health & safety support and guidance to Line Managers.
Requirements

You'll need the following:

Competencies:

  • Fire Precautions Manager.
  • Personal Track Safety Awareness (including AC/DC lines).
  • Risk assessment.

Qualifications and Certifications:

  • NEBOSH Certificate (or equivalent).
  • Accident Investigation.
  • Safety Auditor qualification.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of safety legislation with the ability to undertake risk assessments and safety audits.
  • Knowledge of Safety validation process/ management of change processes.

Skills:

  • The ability to undertake and lead in high profile accident and incident investigations.
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written.
  • The ability to influence at all levels.
  • The ability to work on own initiative.

Experience:

  • Demonstrable experience (typically 3+ years) as a health and safety professional, preferably with at least one year\'s experience of such a role in the railway industry.
Location & Schedule

About the location: This role will be field based, looking after the West region of our network, including Cornwall, Devon, Somerset.

Working Pattern: This is a full time, permanent role working 37 hours per week.
