Job summary

A leading RF solutions firm in Cambridge is seeking a qualified candidate to assume full responsibility for the design and development of RF and mmWave sub-circuits within telecommunications and defense products. The role requires experience with RF design tools and microwave circuit design. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance through documentation, conducting design verification, and delivering fully verified designs on schedule. A relevant degree in RF/Communications Engineering is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Relevant Degree (or equivalent) preferably RF/Communications Engineering.
  • Demonstrable experience of microwave circuit/system design including line-up analyses.
  • Experience in transceiver product design.

Responsibilities

  • Design and development of RF/mmW sub-circuits and systems within telecommunications.
  • Compilation and checking of design documentation in preparation for release.
  • Undertake all aspects of design verification and validation.

Job description

Filtronic delivers cutting‑edge RF and mmWave solutions that power the future of high‑frequency communications. From satellite links to next‑generation sensing systems, we design and manufacture high‑performance components and subsystems—including SSPAs, filters, and transceivers—ensuring seamless connectivity and precision at the highest frequencies.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Full responsibility for the design and development of RF/mmW sub‑circuits, sub‑modules and systems within telecommunications and defence products.
  • Detailed RF/mmW specification, design, simulation and realisation, ideally including:
    1. Transmission lines
    2. Filters (range of topologies)
    3. Coupler design
    4. Synthesiser/multiplier design
    5. Component selection (ICs/MMICs) including vendor liaison
    6. Electromechanical product concept design in collaboration with mechanical design team
    7. Design of support electronics & layout of high‑frequency printed circuit boards in collaboration with electronics/PCB design team
  • System line‑up analysis.
  • Thermal, MTBF and component derating analysis and reporting in line with company/customer requirements.
  • The compilation and checking of design documentation, example: design logbooks, data packs, peer review, etc. in preparation for design release and production.
  • To deliver fully verified and documented designs in line with project defined technical, schedule and cost constraints.
  • Preparing and reviewing tollgate documentation, ensuring the standard according to the NPI procedure is achieved and that reports are progressed and updated throughout the project.
  • To proactively participate in design reviews and to initiate design reviews to mitigate risk when appropriate.
  • To undertake all aspects of design verification and validation including preparation of test specifications, test reports and reliability testing/evaluation.
  • To maintain an up‑to‑date, comprehensive design compliance matrix, referencing robust evidence of compliance data for assigned designs.
  • Problem‑solving and fault diagnosis of manufactured products during product introduction – including definition and train‑out of diagnostic procedures.
Requirements
  • Relevant Degree (or equivalent) preferably RF/Communications Engineering.
  • Experience using RF design tools such as Microwave Office, CST, EMPro and ADS.
  • Demonstrable experience of microwave circuit/system design including line‑up analyses, tolerance/yield analysis and DFM.
  • Experience in transceiver product design.
