Research Associate – Imperial College London

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London. The position is funded by the European Research Council. You will be working on the Stochastic Transport in Upper Ocean Dynamics (STUOD) ERC Synergy Grant 2020. The STUOD project aims to deliver new capabilities for assessing variability and uncertainty in upper ocean dynamics.

Duties and responsibilities

You will take the lead on developing theoretical background for a number of exemplars for ocean models. In addition, you will be involved in numerical experiments on a computer which will lead to mathematical understanding and theoretical results. You will also have the opportunity to develop an independent research project related to the topic of this grant.

You are required to hold a hold a PhD (or be in a final stages of the PhD studies) in the area of Stochastic Analysis in particular in Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Nonlinear Filtering, Homogenisation Theory or Data Assimilation.

The applicant should also possess:

  • Expertise in Stochastic Partial Differential Equations
  • Experience with programming
  • Experience of giving talks at internationally recognised conferences and workshops
  • Experience writing research papers in Stochastic Analysis
  • A broad and strong background in Nonlinear Filtering
  • A strong interest and knowledge of Stochastic Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
  • Knowledge of Data Assimilation techniques

Further information

The position is fixed term for 36 months. The expected start date is 1 st October 2020. Please note that the maximum salary on appointment can be £40,215.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 – £38,566 per annum.
