Job Summary
We are seeking a compassionate, ethical, and clinically competent Counsellor/Therapist who is registered/accredited with BACP and/or BABCP to provide high-quality talking therapy in the UK. The successful candidate will deliver assessment and therapy within their modality and scope of practice, working in line with professional standards, safeguarding requirements, and service policies.
The role involves supporting clients with a wide range of mental health difficulties, including PTSD, anxiety disorders, depression, phobias and avoidance behaviours, sleep disorders, adjustment disorders, and psychological reactions to chronic pain or physical injury.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Delivery - Provide time-limited and/or open-ended therapy in line with training, modality, and scope of practice.
- Complete initial assessments, agree on therapy goals, and develop collaborative treatment plans.
- Deliver evidence-based interventions appropriate to your modality (e.g., CBT-informed work where appropriate; integrative, person-centred, psychodynamic approaches as trained).
- Support clients presenting with PTSD, anxiety disorders, depression, phobias and avoidance behaviours, sleep disorders, adjustment disorders, and psychological reactions to chronic pain or physical injury.
- Review progress with clients and adapt interventions appropriately.
- Maintain professional boundaries and uphold ethical practice at all times.
Risk, Safeguarding & Governance
- Identify, assess, and respond to risk (including self-harm/suicidal ideation, safeguarding concerns, domestic abuse, substance misuse) in line with policy and professional guidance.
- Make appropriate onward referrals and elevate concerns promptly in line with safeguarding procedures.
- Work in accordance with confidentiality, consent, GDPR and information‑sharing principles.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and relevant external professionals (with consent and within policy).
- Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and respectful service environment, demonstrating culturally competent and anti-discriminatory practice.
Essential Criteria
- Current registration/accreditation with BACP and/or BABCP.
- Recognised counselling/psychotherapy training (or CBT training route aligned with BABCP standards, where applicable).
- Experience delivering therapy to clients with a range of mental health presentations, including PTSD, anxiety disorders, depression, phobias and avoidance behaviours, sleep disorders, adjustment disorders, and psychological reactions to chronic pain or physical injury.
- Strong competence in assessment, risk awareness, safeguarding, and ethical decision-making.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and deliver consistent, client-centred care.
- Excellent communication skills and a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working in a structured service (e.g., NHS, primary care, IAPT, EAP, charity, private clinic).
- Additional training/experience in trauma‑informed practice, neurodiversity‑informed care, couples work, or specialist interventions.
Working Arrangements
- Bank hours / sessional work (ad hoc shifts based on service demand and your availability).
- Delivery may include in-person, remote (video/telephone), or hybrid working depending on service requirements.
Compliance Requirements
- Right to work in the UK.
- DBS check (level dependent on client group and service requirements).
- Ongoing maintenance of BACP/BABCP status and adherence to professional ethical frameworks and service policies.
