Overview

Job Category: Legal and Compliance

Job Description: Working predominantly with Heathrow's busy Property team, our Property Lawyer role involves providing high quality legal advice on a wide range of interesting and challenging property matters and running a diverse and complex caseload, vital to the operation of our airport and in support of future growth. The role holder will advise on legal risk and the processes surrounding property issues and be able to independently conduct negotiations to advance transactions and resolve issues. The role will involve reviewing and advising on a variety of property issues including drafting of leases, licences, development documentation, reports, briefings and bespoke agreements. The role holder will be expected to provide strategic advice to the business, including briefings to senior leadership. The role requires effective working and the efficient use of Counsel or external panel solicitors in larger or more complex cases, including negotiating work scope and fee arrangements. Whilst predominantly non-contentious, the role will include the provision of measured and pragmatic strategic advice on complex areas and potential disputes. There must therefore be a willingness to take on a flexible diverse workload and to be agile to meet the varying needs of the business and to upskill in other areas of the law as may be required.

Responsibilities
  • Acting as a Legal Business Partner to the Heathrow Property team
  • Managing a diverse and flexible caseload, including landlord and tenant matters, property development, utilities, acquisition and disposal, land access issues, complex title work, portfolio management and drafting and negotiating bespoke documentation
  • Undertaking research and preparing legal and strategic advice on property matters generally
  • Procuring and managing external legal services and acting as a conduit between external firms and business functions
  • Proactively identifying risks, opportunities and solutions, as well as ways to mitigate risks and maximise opportunities
Qualifications
  • Qualified solicitor in England and Wales
  • Experience in property work, ideally covering a range including acting for both landlords and tenants, development work, title work, land acquisitions and disposals, land assembly, options, pre-emptions and development agreements
  • Knowledge of different areas of law, including planning, telecoms and general contract work would be helpful but more important is a willingness to learn and engage with other members of the legal team if areas of law are unfamiliar
  • Some experience in planning and compulsory purchase work would be helpful
  • Strong written, interpersonal and presentation skills, including briefing senior business leaders
  • Aptitude to balance competing demands from multiple stakeholders and to prioritise effectively
