Job description
Overview

The Client: A well-established and growing construction contractor based in Essex, operating as a family-run SME with a diverse portfolio of works across residential, commercial and public-sector projects. Their workload includes new build housing, refurbishment and fit-out schemes, reactive and planned maintenance, M&E works and council contracts. With continued investment and a clear growth strategy, they are now seeking an experienced Project Manager to play a key role in the next phase of the business.

The Role: As Project Manager, you will take responsibility for the delivery of multiple live construction projects, typically ranging from £500k to £1m+ in value. This is a hands-on, site-focused role requiring strong practical knowledge, regular site presence and the ability to make sound decisions on programme, quality and cost. Reporting directly to the Projects Director, you will manage projects from pre-start through to completion and handover. This role would suit someone with a strong trade or site background who has progressed into project management and is comfortable rolling up their sleeves when site conditions or programme demands require it.

Responsibilities
  • Manage multiple live projects concurrently, from pre-start through to completion and snagging.
  • Take full responsibility for programme, cost, quality and delivery.
  • Produce and maintain construction programmes using MS Project.
  • Manage variations, including client approval for changes to scope and programme.
  • Lead and coordinate directly employed labour and subcontractors across multiple sites.
  • Control labour, plant and subcontractor resources to maximise efficiency and productivity.
  • Prepare, review and implement risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
  • Ensure full compliance with health & safety procedures, including toolbox talks and site records.
  • Maintain accurate site documentation including inductions, labour records, photos, plant and materials logs.
  • Read, interpret and work from technical drawings.
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, suppliers and local authorities.
  • Undertake regular site visits to manage progress, quality and H&S standards.
  • Provide technical input and resolve construction-related queries.
  • Flexibility to work weekends when programme or emergency works require it.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Strong hands-on background within the construction industry.
  • Proven experience managing multiple projects or sites simultaneously.
  • Track record of delivering projects up to £1m+ in value.
  • Excellent understanding of construction sequencing and site operations.
  • Confident leading both direct labour and subcontractors.
  • Working knowledge of MS Project and Excel.
  • Solid understanding of health & safety, RAMS and compliance.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings confidently.
  • Proactive, solutions-focused approach.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Salary & Benefits
  • £50,000 - £55,000 per annum, dependent on experience.
  • Long-term role within a growing and ambitious SME.
  • High level of autonomy and responsibility.
  • Exposure to a wide variety of domestic, commercial and public-sector projects.
