Project Safety Specialist

£53,500 to £62,500 plus up to 6% bonus, and company car

Based in the East region, with Peterborough as the central hub

As this role covers the East region of the UK, we're looking for someone who's based within this area. You'll need to travel to our central hub in Peterborough and other operational sites across the East region, a minimum of 3 days a week.

Locations include: Bacton, Cambridge, Chelmsford, Diss, Hatton, Huntingdon, Kings Lynn, Peterborough, and Wisbech.

About the role

As Project Safety Specialist for the East Region, you’ll provide expert support and assurance to ensure the safe, compliant, and responsible delivery of construction projects across National Gas Transmission’s assets. Working closely with project, operational, and engineering teams, you’ll champion a strong safety culture, drive continual improvement, and embed SHE excellence in all aspects of day-to-day operations.

What you’ll be doing
  • Act as the regional subject matter expert on CDM Regulations, ensuring all construction and project activities meet legal and NGT requirements.
  • Provide specialist advice to Project Managers, Principal Designers, and Contractors on safe design, pre‑construction information, and construction phase plans.
  • Lead reviews of method statements, risk assessments, RAMS, lift plans, and temporary works for safe execution.
  • Conduct planned site inspections, audits, and assurance activities across compressor stations, AGIs, pipelines, and civil works.
  • Identify non‑conformances and unsafe behaviours, supporting teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Deliver real‑time coaching on safe working practices, isolation standards, excavation safety, lifting operations, and confined spaces.
  • Lead SHE risk identification and control, supporting design reviews and construction planning.
  • Investigate incidents and near misses, embedding learning and best practice across the region.
  • Monitor contractor SHE performance, influence improvements, and participate in safety forums and tender evaluations.
  • Build strong stakeholder relationships and deliver targeted safety briefings and toolbox talks.
  • Track and report SHE performance metrics, ensuring timely closure of actions from audits and investigations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and the development of construction safety standards.
About you

You’ll be passionate about safety leadership and confident in influencing behaviours across diverse teams and contractors. You’ll bring strong technical knowledge of construction safety and CDM compliance, combined with excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills to promote a positive safety culture.

Key requirements & experience
  • NEBOSH National General Certificate or NEBOSH Construction Certificate (or equivalent)
  • CDM 2015 training/qualification with clear understanding of duty holder roles
  • Technical knowledge and site‑based experience in construction project planning/delivery on major hazard asset sites
  • Proven experience in a construction or engineering environment
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety Management Systems and audit processes
  • Detailed knowledge of legislative requirements, particularly CDM Regulations
  • Excellent leadership, influencing, and communication skills to engage stakeholders at all levels
  • Full UK car driving licence
