Job description

I am representing a contractor in the South East that is building a strong presence in highways and minor civils delivery. The business has a long track record of successful projects and is expanding its capability in this sector, with frameworks in place and a healthy pipeline of work ahead.

This role is centred on schemes typically up to £350k, covering activities such as resurfacing, drainage upgrades, kerbing, small structures, cycleways, footways and local public realm improvements. You will play a hands on role in reviewing framework opportunities, preparing bids and programmes, and setting out method statements and risk assessments before leading works on site.

The position involves close collaboration with in house engineering, construction and commercial colleagues, while also managing subcontractors to ensure safe and efficient project delivery.

As the highways division expands into multi million pound workstreams, there is a clear progression path into Contracts Management and longer term Business Management.

Key responsibilities
  • Deliver highways and minor civils projects from tender stage through to completion and close out
  • Prepare bids, works programmes, method statements and risk assessments
  • Lead in house teams and manage subcontractors on site to ensure safe, timely and cost effective delivery
  • Monitor progress against programme and budget and provide regular reports to senior management
  • Maintain compliance with client specifications, standards and legislation
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with clients and stakeholders
Candidate profile
  • Minimum five years in the highways or civils sector with experience of minor works
  • At least two years in a project lead role, or a Site Agent looking to progress into project management
  • Degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
  • Professional project management qualification or membership of a recognised body is welcomed
  • Desirable site accreditations include CSCS, SMSTS and NRSWA Supervisor
  • Skilled in planning, health and safety, quality management and financial control
  • Competent with Microsoft Office and project software
  • Full driving licence and flexibility to travel across Southern England
  • Ambitious and motivated to step up as the division grows
The offer
  • Competitive salary and benefits package
  • Bonus scheme linked to performance
  • 28 days annual leave plus pension
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Professional development and training support
  • Clear career progression aligned with the expansion of the highways business
