The Production Planner is responsible for coordinating and scheduling all fabrication, machining, laser cutting, and surface treatment activities to ensure efficient workflow and on-time delivery. This role is central to converting quotations and project scopes into actionable production plans, including material take-offs, procurement coordination, and job sequencing.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical understanding of steel fabrication processes and excellent planning and organisational skills.
Key Responsibilities
Material Take-Off & Preparation
- Review quotations, drawings, and scopes of work to perform accurate material take-offs (MTOs).
- Identify material grades, sizes, consumables, coatings, and special-order items required for each job.
- Prepare and issue material requisitions in coordination with procurement.
- Confirm material availability and delivery lead times to support production scheduling.
Production Planning & Scheduling
- Develop and maintain detailed production schedules for fabrication, machining, laser cutting, and painting operations.
- Prioritise jobs based on client delivery dates, resource availability, and critical path activities.
- Sequence workflow to optimise machine utilisation, reduce bottlenecks, and minimise downtime.
- Coordinate with Workshop Supervisors to align labour, equipment, and shift capacity with the production plan.
- Update schedules daily based on progress, changes, or constraints.
Job Coordination & Workflow Management
- Track job progress against schedule and elevate delays or risks.
- Ensure job folders, drawings, and instructions are complete and ready for workshop teams.
- Allocate jobs to work centres (e.g., laser, machining, fabrication, paint) based on material readiness and priority.
- Coordinate subcontracted processes when required (e.g., galvanising, specialised machining, NDT).
Communication & Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with Project Managers, Workshop Supervisors, Procurement, and Stores to ensure smooth workflow.
- Attend daily production meetings and provide updates on job status and schedule risks.
- Communicate material shortages, changes, or priority adjustments to all relevant stakeholders.
- Ensure client delivery commitments are met and flag potential impacts early.
Inventory & Procurement Support
- Maintain visibility on inventory levels and support procurement in managing stock and reorder points.
- Verify material receipts against project requirements.
- Assist in managing surplus materials and minimising waste.
- Maintain accurate records of production hours, material usage, and job progress.
- Provide production performance reports to management.
- Identify opportunities to improve workflow efficiency, material handling, and scheduling processes.
- Contribute to the development of planning tools, templates, and digital systems.
Skills & Experience
- 3–5 years’ experience in production planning or coordination within a fabrication or machining environment.
- Strong understanding of fabrication, welding, machining, and cutting processes.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Proficiency in production planning tools, spreadsheets, or ERP/MRP systems.
- Strong organisational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
