Job description
Overview of the role:

You’ll manage major schemes from pre-application through to decision, working closely with applicants, Members and key stakeholders. The role also supports the Team Leader with staff supervision and helps drive a high-performing, customer-focused planning service.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Leadership & Team Support: Support the Team Leader in managing workload, supervising staff, mentoring junior officers and contributing to the effective performance, resilience and continuous improvement of the Area Team.
  • Complex Casework & Decision-Making: Act as lead case officer on complex, high-profile and strategically significant planning applications and pre-applications, exercising professional judgement to ensure robust, lawful and policy-compliant decisions.
  • Appeals, Negotiations & Representation: Lead on complex planning appeals, negotiations (including S106, affordable housing and CIL), and represent the Council as an expert witness at Public Inquiries, Examinations and court proceedings. Strategic &
  • Partnership Working: Work collaboratively with senior officers, Members, external agencies, developers and communities to deliver coordinated services, support regeneration objectives and promote the Council’s planning function. Governance,
  • Performance & Best Practice: Ensure high standards of reporting, consultation, performance monitoring and use of ICT systems, contributing to value for money, statutory compliance, service improvement and corporate priorities.
