Primary SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Weymouth, Dorset

Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday

Pay: £89–£95 per day

About the Role

We are looking for a dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant to join a friendly and inclusive primary school in Weymouth. This full‑time position is based within Key Stage 2 and involves providing 1:1 support for pupils with additional needs, particularly those experiencing social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) challenges.

The successful candidate will help pupils feel safe, supported and ready to learn, making a meaningful difference to their wellbeing and academic progress each day.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide individual and small group support to pupils with a range of SEND, with a focus on SEMH.
  • Support the implementation of personalised learning plans under the direction of the class teacher.
  • Encourage active participation and confidence within the classroom.
  • Promote positive social interaction and peer relationships.
  • Monitor and record progress, sharing relevant updates with staff and parents where appropriate.
  • Use positive behaviour management and de‑escalation strategies to support emotional regulation.
  • Prepare and adapt learning materials to meet pupils’ individual needs.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance SEND knowledge and practice.
Requirements
  • Experience working in a classroom setting (essential).
  • Confidence supporting children with additional or complex needs.
  • Understanding of the impact of trauma, attachment and emotional regulation on learning.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with colleagues, pupils and parents.
  • Patience, empathy and resilience, with a genuine commitment to helping pupils succeed.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Enhanced DBS check (current or willingness to obtain).
  • Reliable transport or a driving licence, which is an advantage due to the school’s location.
