Job Summary
We are looking to recruit a new Phlebotomy Lead to join our existing team based at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. Excellent communication skills are essential, together with an empathetic nature, strong management skills and a mind for service development. Successful applicants will have a flexible approach, enthusiasm, proven management skills and be able to use their own initiative to continue to deliver and build on the fantastic service we currently provide. Phlebotomy experience would be beneficial but not essential as the job will be primarily focused on service management and development and full training will be provided.

Main Duties
- Direct management of the service and support of the Phlebotomy team.
- Drive service development working with the division.
- Manage team rotas, holidays, sickness and absence within the team.
- Liaise and communicate with Pathology Department, GP's, Medical colleagues, Ward staff, suppliers, patients and other NHS Trusts. Maintain good working relationships with all disciplines.
- Responsible for the management of staff resources to maximise efficiency within the agreed budget levels.

Job Responsibilities
- Plan, deliver and evaluate care, adhering to evidence based clinical standards and protocols in accordance with Trust standards and protocols.
- Direct management and support of the Phlebotomy team.
- Management, implementation and validation of processes across the service.
- Plan and prioritise own duties and workload, balancing patient related and professional demand.
- Lead in planning and coordination of the Phlebotomy service.
- Make changes to clinical practice and lead implementation of new working practices when required.
- Highlight capacity and demand issues.
- Investigate complaints or incidents and complete necessary documentation including implementation of action plans.
- Coordinate annual leave, maintain accurate staff records and sickness and absence rates.
- Collect blood samples from adults by venepuncture on Trust and non Trust sites in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.
- Assist in practical training of staff in blood collection techniques.
- Maintain adequate stock levels of the blood collection system in inpatient and outpatient areas.
- Work within all standard operational policies and health and safety procedures of the department in accordance with Trust standards and policies.
- Perform routine technical procedures using the glucometer and contribute to the QA scheme.
- Participate in changes to clinical practice and undertake new working practices when required.
- Follow strict hand hygiene in all areas at all times.
- Participate in regular audit activities within the department.
- Complete DATIX incidents in line with Trust policy.
- Write and update all risk assessments and SOP for the Phlebotomy Department.
- Ensure the department meets all statutory obligations with regard to health and safety.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Degree level qualification or equivalent relevant to subject area.
- Evidence of professional and/or personal self‑development.
- Supervisory/managerial qualification, e.g., CMI level 3 or working towards.
- NVQ Level 4 Teaching qualification or equivalent experience/qualification.
Essential Experience
- Staff personal development experience.

- Substantive experience as a Senior Phlebotomist.
