Job description

The ENT / Plastic Surgery Outpatient Department at the John Radcliffe Hospital (West Wing) runs clinics for a variety of clinical specialties. To manage, communicate with, and lead a team of nursing staff, consisting of Registered nurses, nursing assistants, AHPs and technicians to deliver high standards of care within Outpatients. The role involves day‑to‑day management of the nursing team, ensuring service needs meet government and trust objectives, achieving departmental targets, and managing a defined budget.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage nursing staff, ensuring adherence to Trust policies and delivering smooth patient journeys.
  • Resolve patient complaints while maintaining confidentiality and managing sensitive information.
  • Communicate and liaise with clinical leads, consultants, doctors, AHPs, GP, managers, community staff, directors, and specialty teams.
  • Provide clinical leadership through expert knowledge and support for the pre‑operative assessment service.
  • Act as the main resource for the Patient Link line (by phone and in person).
  • Accept accountability for professional conduct.
  • Ensure staff are trained to use required equipment safely.
  • Maintain a safe and secure pathway for patients attending Outpatients.
  • Collaborate with academic colleagues on clinical research projects; teaching and supporting medical and nursing staff is a major part of the role.
  • Support the Trust’s commitment to innovation, research, and workforce education.
Essential Qualifications
  • RN Level 1 with a relevant degree.
  • Proven experience leading a team.
  • Evidence of substantial CPD in management and related clinical subjects.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Previous outpatient nursing experience.
  • Awareness of general management including finance, HR, and business development.
  • Teaching qualification and registered nurse status.
  • Degree in nursing qualification.
  • Experience in ENT / Plastic Surgery nursing.
  • Proven leadership experience.
  • Leadership experience or qualification.
  • Pre‑operative assessment experience.
  • Aural care experience.
  • Wound management / tissue viability experience.
  • Appropriate UK professional registration.
