Job description
Older Person Liaison Psychiatry Nurse

Closing date: 22 December 2025

30 hours per week – Seven days a week between 08:00 and 20:00, working a combination of long days and short days.

Mental Health Services in Doncaster have benefited from funding during 2019 and 2020. This investment has enabled us to expand our Hospital Liaison Mental Health Team. The Liaison Mental Health Service Model within Doncaster Royal Infirmary is part of NHS England’s “Achieving Better Access to 24/7 Urgent and Emergency Mental Health Care” Guidance.

Older adults with mental health problems are three times more likely to attend an Emergency Department, and five times more likely to be admitted to a general hospital as an emergency. Working within a Mental Health Liaison Team is an extremely essential and rewarding role.

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Mental Health Nurse to join our Older Persons Hospital Liaison Team. To be successful, you must be able to work autonomously and have strong clinical and risk‑management skills.

We are looking for an RMN with experience with older adults or an interest in working with older adults. Part of the day‑to‑day role is to support general hospital wards with older people’s mental health, assessing, continuing care and planning a safe discharge.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide a response to Mental Health Crisis in Emergency Departments and Inpatient Wards within one hour, and to all urgent Ward referrals within 24 hours.
  • Complete a full biopsychosocial assessment and formulation and contribute to treatment and collaborative care plans.
  • Offer brief evidence‑based interventions as inpatient or short‑term outpatient follow‑up.
  • Work within Rotherham General Hospital to reduce length of stay on general hospitals and improve follow‑up care.
  • Provide advice and support to Rotherham General Hospital staff regarding mental health care for their patients.
