Non Interventional Consultant Cardiology

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Cardiology Consultant to join our forward‑thinking and highly regarded Cardiology Department at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will deliver high‑quality care to patients with cardiovascular conditions, support departmental policy development, and contribute to the training and education of junior medical staff.
Main duties of the job
- Clinical duties:
- Deliver high‑quality care to cardiology and GIM patients, working collaboratively with fellow Consultants and the multidisciplinary team.
- Provide cardiology input to patients on the cardiac ward and to cardiology outliers across the Trust.
- Participate in the general cardiology weekend rota (1:5 ward round), delivering comprehensive weekend reviews including assessments in the Acute Medical Unit for new cardiology referrals.
- Undertake general cardiology and stable chest pain clinics.
- Share leadership of the non‑interventional cardiology service, supporting the delivery of imaging (CMRI, TOE, stress echo, CTCA), Heart Failure and general cardiology services according to skill set.
- Provide expert clinical advice and leadership to specialist nurses and the wider clinical team.
- Ensure high standards of documentation and maintain accurate, detailed patient records.
- Supervise and support the training of junior doctors and cardiac physiologists.
- Teaching and supervision:
- Teach, supervise and support junior doctors, physician associates and medical students, including participation in the Qualified Education Supervisor Programme (QESP).
- Participate in continuing professional development, departmental teaching and specialist cardiology training activities.
- Lead and contribute to clinical research, audit projects and evidence‑based practice developments within the department.
- Administrative and strategic duties:
- Organise, lead and continually develop outpatient clinics across both sites, ensuring alignment with Trust protocols, pathways and strategic objectives.
- Participate in departmental meetings, service planning and the ongoing development of non‑interventional cardiology pathways.
- Contribute effectively to achieving the Trusts strategic goals, operational targets and patient‑focused quality standards.
- Provide leadership in service delivery, including supervision of junior medical staff and members of the cardiac ward team.
- On‑call rota: 1:5 weekend ward round, Category A (5%) on‑call availability supplement. PAs may be adjusted as per job plan.
- Clinical audit and research: Participate in clinical audit activities of the department and hospitals; undertake research and develop special interests within workload limits.
- Continuing medical education: Undertake continuing medical education internally and externally with study leave entitlement as appropriate.

Person Specification
- Qualifications:
- MRCP or equivalent.
- CCT/CCST in Cardiology specialty.
- Higher degree e.g. MD, PhD, QESP or working towards.
- CCST in GIM (or eligible for CCST and registration within 6 months of interview).
- Experience:
- Wide clinical experience in Cardiology and General Internal Medicine.
- Extensive experience in coronary intervention.
- Sub‑specialty interest in (non) interventional cardiology or another complementary area.
- Skills:
- Knowledge and awareness of diversity and human rights.
- Effective communication with patients, families and staff.
- Ability to recognise individual needs, promote independence and adapt care.
- Teaching:
- Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and junior doctors.
- Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff.
- Previous participation in MRCP teaching QESP and “Training the Trainers” experience.
- Management:
- Willingness to participate in management activities.
- Understanding of NHS policy and national performance targets.
- Experience of managing budgets, staff, change management and management qualification.
- Research:
- Experience of research, particularly collaborative with other clinicians.
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
- Willingness to continue participation in research and publication in refereed journals.
