Overview
EPUT is looking to appoint a fixed term NHS Locum Specialty Doctor who will provide consistent, high quality Medical Psychiatric support to the Mental Health Urgent care department which caters to adults over the age of 18, who are experiencing a mental health crisis.
You should be eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold Section 12 (2) approval under the Mental Health Act 1983. You will also need to provide evidence of achievement of ST1/CT1 competences in psychiatry at time of application and likelihood of achieving CT2 competences in psychiatry by the start date of the post.
The department will offer a therapeutic mental health setting to assess urgent mental health presentations which might otherwise have been seen in the A+E department. The service will offer a comprehensive assessment and onward care planning through a diverse and highly skilled mental health workforce incorporating support workers, peer coaches, social worker, nurses and doctors. The service will work closely with existing urgent mental health care pathways and other appropriate services in the local health and social care system, including voluntary care sector organisations, to provide holistic and person centred care.
The service will also be working closely with the Basildon A+E department in being able to offer a limited range of physical health interventions in the department itself and if appropriate for onward referral to relevant specialties in the general hospital.
The post-holder will be expected to work independently and accountably providing clinical leadership to the team, through good multi-professional working and liaising with a range of professional groups including nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists and doctors in delivering services.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive and holistic psychiatric assessments and risk assessments independently whilst appropriately seeking advice from the Consultant in complex cases.
- Participate and provide recommendations in MHA assessments for patients presenting to the service when appropriate.
- Record clinical entries contemporaneously in the electronic patient record.
- Offer advice and supervision to other junior clinical members in the team when appropriate.
- Attend handover meetings every day.
- Attend the weekly regular supervision with the Consultant.
- Provide medical leadership to the team when the Consultant is away with support from the covering Consultant when appropriate.
- Attend and actively contribute to weekly MDT meetings.
- Liaise with different specialties and departments to ensure seamless continuation of patient care.
- Dictate letters to other services when appropriate to ensure seamless continuation of patient care.
- Be a strong team player and work with the Multidisciplinary team in delivering holistic care.
- Actively participate in the clinical governance of the team.
- Actively participate in the teaching and training of junior clinical members of the team as appropriate.
Qualifications and requirements
- GMC registration in good standing at time of appointment.
- Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act 1983.
- Evidence of achievement of ST1/CT1 competences in psychiatry at application and likelihood of achieving CT2 competences by start date.
