Department Overview

Join our Shared Platform services team as a Network Engineer, where you will be instrumental in the planning, designing and implementation of new networking solutions all whilst providing critical support for existing infrastructure. These solutions have multiple products deemed as critical national infrastructure and operate on an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform.

Job Description

This role is primarily remote, with travel to UK locations. This may extend to international locations also.

About the Products You Will Support
  • Guardian is a call‑taking & dispatching platform used by emergency service operators across the UK & Europe. We help 999 or 101 operators answer calls from the public and dispatch out nearby responders, enabling the right response when every second counts, and ultimately helping our customers save lives.
  • Pronto is a digital notebook service providing front‑line police officers with access to national systems to obtain information quickly and efficiently when working within their communities. Pronto also allows for digital evidence collection which can be used as evidence in juridical processes, location services for fast dispatching of officers, and a range of many other tools to aid in an officer’s day‑to‑day activities.
Our Team Structure

Our team is structured into distinct streams: networking, virtualisation, and infrastructure. These teams collaborate closely to manage all facets of the infrastructure. Our primary goal is to provide optimal service for the hosted products and, ultimately, for our customers who are dedicated to protecting our communities.

The infrastructure is going through rapid changes in every aspect over the next year. You will succeed in this role if you are a person who wants to learn new technologies in a fast‑paced environment, have a willingness to get involved with different projects all whilst maintaining the demanding Service Level Agreements of our existing hosted solutions.

Operational Responsibilities
  • Manage and support networking operations across multiple Motorola sites and customer remote sites.
  • Maintain firewall rules, routing policies, NAT and security objects across multiple different technologies.
  • Design, review & maintain network documentation and topology diagrams.
  • Work with third‑party vendors to troubleshoot outages / circuit faults etc.
  • Participate in an on‑call rotation (begins after 6 months of service).
  • Conduct capacity planning, performance tuning and optimisation.
  • Ensure compliance with security policies and regulatory requirements from a public sector perspective, such as ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials and NCSC Security best practices.
  • Travel to any of our internal or customer sites as necessary, these are currently all located in the UK but may entail international travel.
  • Support the Incident Management team in ensuring efficient delivery and resolution of incidents and problems with a solution.
  • Continuous personal and professional development in keeping abreast of emerging industry and technological trends and threats.
Basic Requirements
Core Requirements
  • 3 years minimum experience in a similar role.
  • Ability to attain NPPV3 and SC clearance.
Resident Requirement

Must be a resident of the UK for a minimum of 5 years to obtain.

Communication Skills
  • Must effectively be able to articulate network concepts and solutions to diverse audiences, including technical peers, non‑technical stakeholders, customers, and internal staff.
Network Infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking concepts (VLANs, routing protocols, subnetting, STP).
  • Hands‑on experience with Aruba Switches (or other vendors e.g. Cisco, HP, Juniper).
  • Experience in managing and troubleshooting private circuits.
  • Experience with WAN technologies (DIA, IPSEC over internet, EWLs).
Routing Infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of routing protocols (OSPF / BGP).
  • Experience in designing and maintaining multi‑site routing topologies.
  • Experience in troubleshooting routing problems (routing loops, asymmetric routing, route redistribution issues etc).
Firewalls & Security
  • Administration of a large firewall estate across multiple sites (Fortinet / Checkpoint).
  • Experience in writing, reviewing, and maintaining firewall rulesets aligned with the operational policy and security standards.
  • Familiarity with NAT (static / dynamic / PAT), UTM features, IDS/IPS policies.
  • Knowledge of VPN technologies (IPSEC, IKEV2, route‑based).
Monitoring & Security
  • Experience with taking packet captures and using analysis tools such as wireshark to troubleshoot connectivity issues.
  • Experience with network monitoring (Grafana/Prometheus/Solarwinds/Fortianalyser).
  • Experience in identifying security best practices when deploying solutions.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience with SD-WAN solutions (Fortinet SD‑WAN).
  • Basic understanding of SD‑WAN configuration such as overlay and underlay, path selection, link monitoring etc.
  • Experience with SIP technologies.
  • Experience with SDN technologies (VMWare NSX, Cisco ACI, OVN).
  • Experience with RedHat Openshift solutions.
