Responsibilities
- As a qualified Nurse, you will co-ordinate and provide treatment to an identified group of patients under your care with the responsibility to assess, plan, implement and evaluate their care using evidence based practices.
- Ensure assessments and care plans reflect the psychological, emotional, social care, treatment, interventions, risk management and physical healthcare needs of patients.
- Assess and manage risks associated with the working environment and follow appropriate Trust policies and procedures; champion service user safety and drive continuous improvement in the workplace.
- Safely custody, control and administer medications, taking appropriate action to provide safe administration as prescribed to patients.
- Coordinate shifts effectively on a day to day basis and provide day-to-day practical training for staff on procedures related to the care of people with mental health problems.
- Lead and manage a shift, including acting as named nurse for an identified group of patients and, when acting as shift leader, maintain knowledge of current care needs of all patients.
- Use a range of therapeutic techniques when managing patients with challenging and unpredictable needs, including during aggressive incidents; demonstrate leadership in emergency situations (e.g., cardiac arrest).
- Adhere to Trust Policies and Procedures, maintain accurate patient records, ensure confidentiality and safe storage of information.
- Undertake surveys or audits as necessary, contribute to workplace development plans or projects, and participate in at least one practice development project.
- Work within NMC codes, practice guidelines, and Trust policies; ensure up-to-date knowledge aligned with NMC guidelines.
- Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, relatives/carers, and colleagues; involve patients in care planning wherever possible.
- Respond to emergencies, provide support networks, and be creative in solving problems; deliver care for people with complex needs and communicate unwelcome news sensitively.
Qualifications and requirements
- Registered Mental Health Nurse (NMC) with current practicing certification.
- Sound knowledge of care for people with mental health and physical health needs; ability to reflect best practice.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work in a multi-diverse team; commitment to service user safety and continuous improvement.
- Ability to plan and implement nursing care for mental health and physical health needs; assess and manage work environment risk; knowledge of clinical policies and confidentiality standards.
- Experience in leading shifts, supervising staff, and organising resources; ability to manage patient records, de-escalation techniques and PMVA as required by policy.
