Job description
Mechanical Engineer – Site‑based role in the water & environmental sector

As a Mechanical Engineer, you'll be out on site, not stuck behind a desk. You'll be hands‑on with pumps, pipework and process plant, keeping critical water and wastewater assets running safely and efficiently across the region.

What you'll be doing as a Mechanical Engineer
  • Install, maintain and repair mechanical systems on clean and wastewater treatment sites
  • Work on pumps, valves, pipework, aeration systems, mechanical screens, mixers and associated plant
  • Carry out refurbishments, alignments, replacements and upgrades
  • Support both planned preventative maintenance and reactive breakdown works
  • Travel to multiple client sites, with occasional overnight stays depending on project needs
  • Fault‑find, diagnose and resolve issues safely and efficiently
  • Complete commissioning, testing and integration of mechanical equipment
  • Follow all site safety procedures, permits, RAMS and environmental requirements
  • Keep clear, accurate records – job sheets, measurements, photos and commissioning logs

You’ll be working predominantly on site, often outdoors and sometimes in confined spaces, as part of a small, supportive engineering team.

What you’ll bring

To be successful as a Mechanical Engineer, you will have:

  • A background in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Fitting or similar
  • Experience as a Mechanical Engineer / Mechanical Fitter in an industrial, utilities or water environment
  • Strong hands‑on skills with pumps, pipework, valves and rotating machinery
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and interpret technical specifications
  • Full UK driving licence (travel is a key part of the role)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team
It would be an advantage (but not essential) if you also have
  • Experience on UK water utility sites
  • CSCS card
  • Confined Space, National Water Hygiene (EUSR), Shea Water, water utility passports
  • SSSTS, First Aid or similar H&S qualifications
  • HNC/HND/Degree/NVQ in a mechanical or electrical discipline
What’s in it for you
  • 22 days' annual leave + bank holidays
  • Company van
  • Private healthcare, income protection and pension
  • Onsite parking and in‑house gym
  • Company events & employee referral scheme
  • Free bus commute to site/office locations

This full‑time, permanent Mechanical Engineer role is 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with plenty of variety, autonomy and the chance to build a long‑term career in the water and environmental sector.

If you’re an experienced Mechanical Engineer or mechanical fitter looking for a site‑based role with responsibility, variety and strong benefits, this could be the ideal next step.
