Job description

I am recruiting a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a high–profile nuclear decommissioning programme in Reading. This role is ideal for someone passionate about mechanical systems design in safety–critical environments. You'll be at the forefront of delivering safe, compliant, and robust mechanical designs that support the decommissioning of nuclear facilities.

  • Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer – Nuclear Decommissioning Projects
  • Location: Reading (3–4 days on–site per week)
  • Duration: 6–12 months Contract
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Rate: GBP54 per hour (inclusive of base location expenses)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead mechanical design processes from concept to delivery using CAD tools (AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Produce technical documentation including specifications, reports and manuals in line with nuclear regulatory standards.
  • Support prototyping, simulations and FEA to validate and refine design concepts.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders across design, engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Ensure design compliance with health, safety, environmental, and nuclear legislation alongside engaging in continuous improvement of design methodologies and industry best practices
  • Provide input across multiple project stages, from feasibility through to construction and commissioning.

Expectations/Qualifications:

  • Degree–qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (minimum ONC/OND required; HNC/HND desirable).
  • 2+ years' experience in mechanical design engineering, ideally within the nuclear or high–hazard sectors.
  • Proficient in CAD (AutoCAD, SolidWorks), with experience in FEA and design validation tools an advantage.
  • Strong understanding of engineering legislation and design compliance.
  • Highly organised with strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
