Job description

Northampton General Hospital is advertising for the position of Maintenance Technician‑Multiskilled‑Electrical. The Trust is investing in the Estates Engineering infrastructure, primarily in our mechanical and electrical engineering systems, to provide the foundation for significant carbon reductions through the introduction of new renewable technologies.

The post holder will undertake a wide and varied technical maintenance work programme, including reactive work, planned preventive maintenance, breakdown repairs, and upgrades across both mechanical and electrical services. Work is performed at a technical level and may involve other maintenance disciplines.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair faults on a wide range of complex equipment, services and systems.
  • Maintain emergency and contingency systems to support critical services and minimise disruption during emergency situations.
  • Act as a ‘Competent Person’ as required and maintain strict records of engineering systems to meet operational and statutory requirements.
  • Be appointed as an 'Approved Person' on dedicated systems, dependant on training, experience and qualification.
  • Organise materials requisitions and assist in purchasing where required.
  • Supervise and provide mentoring to apprentices, maintenance assistants, contractors and other staff.
  • Communicate complex technical issues and solutions to other technical staff and contractors, and explain technical information in layperson terms.
  • Use permit‑to‑work, risk assessments, orders and job documentation, completing them accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Keep the customer and helpdesk appraised of work at all times, including feedback on progress and delays.
  • Investigate and promote new working practices that provide more efficient and customer‑responsive service.
  • Manufacture, assemble, erect and install new work.
  • Provide out‑of‑hours call‑out cover on a rota basis and cover gaps in the on‑call rota as necessary.
  • Perform any additional duties as specified by the Estates Maintenance Manager.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Act as a 'Competent Person' and 'Approved Person' where required.
  • Demonstrated ability to interrogate and utilise information from building management, fire system and other engineering computer systems.
  • Comply with all current Health & Safety legislation and attend training as instructed.
  • Be available to work additional hours as required.
