Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic ophthalmologist with subspecialty fellowship experience in neuro-ophthalmology. This is for a period of 12 months pending a future appointment to a substantive Consultant post at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) if suitable. We are increasing our current consultant team to meet growing ophthalmic demands. The post holder will join an integrated medical team and work with its extended team of specialist nurses, allied health professionals, technicians and photographers to support new ways of working and expand BMEC’s high-quality services.

Responsibilities
  • Support the specialised neuro-ophthalmology services in tertiary settings, including services for the regional Ophthalmic A&E.
  • Receive weekday support for emergencies and advice from the neuro-ophthalmology service in Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
  • Collaborate with the orthoptist team and Medical Visual Function Team to access imaging and diagnostic services (e.g., B-scan ultrasound and electrodiagnostic tests).
  • Contribute to the development of a fully functional neuro-ophthalmology service and a fellowship programme.
  • Work with an extended team of specialist nurses, allied health professionals, technicians and photographers to support new ways of working and expand services.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Essential: Entry on the Specialist Register in Ophthalmology or relevant experience at consultant level
  • Essential: FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Essential: GMC registration with License to Practice
  • Desirable: Higher Degree
  • Desirable: Special interest that complements the existing consultants or has a special interest in Ophthalmology
  • Essential: Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Ophthalmology
  • Essential: Fulfils all other essential criteria as per Personal Specification
  • Desirable: Formal training in teaching
  • Desirable: Knowledge and experience of applying information technology to the specialty
  • Desirable: Publications in peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years
  • Desirable: Evidence of having undertaken original research
