Job Overview

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for Consultant Anaesthetists, available as soon as possible for a period of 6 months. The posts will deliver 10 PAs flexibly supporting the anaesthetic team at Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital, Leeds.

The successful applicant shall hold FRCA accreditation (or equivalent) and be on the Specialist Register or within six months of admission to the Register for trainees. Applicants must demonstrate established anaesthesia skills, excellent communication, and strong commitment to teaching and service development. They are expected to embody The Leeds Way values by delivering patient‑centred care, working collaboratively, treating patients and colleagues fairly, and empowering those around them. Accountability is essential to ensure optimal use of resources.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a motivated and skilled Locum Consultant Anaesthetist to join our team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. You will work collaboratively with consultant colleagues, delivering high‑quality anaesthetic care across diverse surgical specialities. You will support service plans, adapt to evolving clinical practices and new technologies, and contribute to the Clinical Governance agenda to ensure the highest standards of patient safety and care.

You will have the opportunity to shape the development of future doctors and anaesthetists by supervising and teaching undergraduates and anaesthesia residents. The Trust provides opportunities to support established research within your job plan.

Job responsibilities

This 10 PA/week locum appointment supports the current anaesthetics team of over 150 Consultants for six months. The core purpose is to work alongside consultant colleagues to deliver a comprehensive anaesthetic service while actively supporting the speciality's service plans by embracing changes in clinical practice and new technologies. A key responsibility includes engaging with and advancing Clinical Governance initiatives.

The appointee will maintain and contribute to existing teaching and research activities, such as supervising resident doctors and undergraduate students. The role includes 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs for professional activities, delivered within a carefully designed rota. Your job plan will be reviewed annually, with interim reviews as needed. You will report managerially to the Chief Executive and professionally to the Chief Medical Officer.

Compliance with General Medical Council Good Medical Practice, Trust Core Behaviours, and mandatory appraisals is required. All leave must follow Trust policy. Mandatory training and continuing medical education are supported by the Trust. The role provides necessary secretarial support, IT facilities, and requires adherence to Health and Safety, Infection Control, and patient confidentiality policies.

  • Fit to practise safely and demonstrated written and spoken English skills. Evidence may be provided through under‑graduate medical training in English, IELTS minimum score of 7.5, or OET minimum Grade B, with candidate number provided.
Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
  • Completion of a recognised training programme in Anaesthesia

  • Hold full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
