A leading health board in the UK is looking for a part-time Locum Consultant Geriatrician and Physician based at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. This role is critical in supporting the Acute Geriatrics team, providing specialist geriatrics care, and participating in medical on-call duties. Candidates should have full GMC registration and relevant experience in General Medicine along with effective team and leadership skills. A competitive salary of £84,884 per annum is offered for a commitment of 7 sessions per week.

Job description
Locum Consultant Geriatrician and Physician

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant Geriatrician & Physician based at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, to work with existing Consultant Geriatrician colleagues. This locum post is part-time, working 7 sessions per week, and is for a fixed‑term period of six months whilst covering a vacancy and pending recruitment to a new post in the future.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary for this post is £84,884 per annum for a 7‑session commitment.

Applicants should preferably either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will support the Acute Geriatrics team and will undertake specialist geriatrics retrieval, review patients as required in the Emergency Department and Acute Medicine footprint, and undertake ward rounds on the Older Person's Acute Medical unit. They will work closely with the nurses and therapists in the Frailty Intervention Team and will carry the acute geriatrician phone. They will also undertake clinical reviews with the support of a resident doctor of Physician Associate.

The second part of the post offers a novel opportunity to further develop a POPs model within the Health Board, working with the Lead Geriatrician in the surgical department alongside specialist nurses and wider MDT members.

The post holder will participate in the acute general internal medical on‑call rota on a 1:16 basis.
