Aims of Job / Job Purpose

The role of a Main Grade Lecturer (MGL) at South & City College Birmingham is to support the college’s aims, objectives, and mission statement by providing quality education and training in response to local need.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
  • Teach City & Guild/NVQ and new T Level Carpentry Multi‑Skilled courses (theory and practical) up to Level 3.
  • Plan and manage learning programmes, including curriculum development and regular review meetings.
  • Manage and track the student learning programme, administer paperwork related to tutor courses, track documents, monitor targets, and arrange additional support where required.
  • Act as a course leader providing learners with academic support.
  • Carry out assessment, including initial advice, initial assessment, referral for additional support, assign homework, and provide timely feedback.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of student and course registers; address poor attendance and set targets.
  • Liaise with parents/guardians, schools and other organisations regarding attendance and achievements.
  • Maintain student progress records and monitor targets, Individual Learning Plans, and e‑Tracker.
  • Manage classroom behaviour, attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain appropriate internal and external quality standards (e.g., Internal Verification and External Verification).
  • Comply with equality in teaching and learning.
  • Contribute to enrichment programmes, work placements and educational visits.
  • Adhere to College quality assurance procedures, including lesson observations.
  • Carry out student assessments using a range of techniques and tools determined by the college.
  • Provide pastoral care and student support in conjunction with Student Services.
  • Work with the Quality Team and Curriculum Division to monitor, evaluate and improve learning effectiveness.
  • Support students to improve study skills and exam techniques.
  • Cover for colleagues as per contractual arrangements and, where required, mentor new staff.
  • Act as a personal tutor, complete ILPs, deliver tutorial programmes, liaise with parents or employers, assist with UCAS applications and references, and support course student representatives.
  • Undertake any other duties directed by the grade of the post and the MGL contract of employment.
  • Keep up to date with industry and education developments such as new technologies and T Levels.
