Job description
Lead Software Development Engineer – SRE (Global Payment Network)

Farnborough (95987), United Kingdom

About this role

Do you love building and pioneering in the technology space? Do you enjoy solving complex business problems in a fast‑paced, collaborative, inclusive and iterative delivery environment? At Capital One you’ll be part of a big group of makers, breakers, doers and disruptors who love to solve real problems and meet real customer needs. We are seeking Site Reliability Engineers who are passionate about marrying data with emerging technologies to join our team. As a Site Reliability Engineer you’ll have the opportunity to be on the forefront of driving a major transformation within Capital One.

What You’ll Do

You will be joining the SRE team responsible for managing the Digital Payments platform of Discover, a Global Payments network. You will be improving the reliability of platforms supporting Digital wallets and payments platforms running high‑volume transactions.

What We’re Looking For
  • Strong experience of using infrastructure as code and working with immutable infrastructure and configuration tools such as Terraform and Ansible to achieve end‑to‑end automation
  • Good knowledge of programming, scripting, functional and performance testing tools (Python, BASH, Cucumber, JMeter, Gatling)
  • Hands‑on experience working with UNIX environments, load balancers, GTMs
  • Excellent hands‑on experience with observability tools (Elasticsearch, Kibana, Datadog, Splunk)
  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms orchestration: designing infrastructure deployment patterns within AWS, Kubernetes, OpenShift; working with multiple geographically distributed development teams to diagnose performance, reliability and security issues in applications and system design
  • Engage with development teams and conduct thorough forensic analysis of system design and data flows and highlight any resiliency gaps of services. Work alongside wider payments reliability teams and across Discover and Capital One to ensure we follow similar design patterns and avoid duplicated work
  • Work with our technology suppliers to ensure interfacing systems follow best practices that we have defined
  • Good working knowledge of database or streaming platform, in particular strong knowledge in at least one of Kafka or Postgres
  • Mentoring SREs and developers to help them design the right solutions and promote a culture of reliability and automation, contributing to best practices
  • Ability to manage multiple high‑priority efforts/competing priorities and flexibility to adjust to changing requirements, schedules and priorities
  • Real interest in documentation – ability to document technical problems and post‑mortems accurately
Where and How You’ll Work

This is a permanent position and is based in our Farnborough office. We have a hybrid working model which gives you flexibility to work from our offices and from home. We’re big on collaboration and connection so you’ll be based in our Farnborough office 2 days a week.
