Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Trust as a Lead Nurse in Dermatology based at Ormskirk Hospital. The post-holder will provide expert leadership and management within a multi-disciplinary team and deliver highly advanced specialist/clinical nursing expertise for dermatology patients. The post-holder will advise primary and secondary care clinicians on setting up, implementing, delivering and evaluating patient care using evidence-based practice, and will provide a service in line with national, regional and local guidance, standards, protocols and policies to ensure positive patient outcomes.

The post-holder will contribute to senior management and governance frameworks within the care group and be line manager to band 7 and band 6 nurse specialists/nurse practitioners. A job plan will be agreed with the post holder and manager and reviewed annually as part of appraisal, including appropriate clinical supervision. The JD & PS are under AfC review and subject to change. Interview Date – To Be Confirmed.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expert leadership and management within a multi-disciplinary team and deliver highly advanced specialist/clinical nursing expertise for dermatology patients.
  • Advise primary and secondary care clinicians about setting up, implementation, delivery and evaluation of patient care utilising evidence-based practice; provide a service in accordance with national, regional and local guidance, standards and protocols and policies.
  • Contribute to senior management and governance frameworks within the care group; line manager to band 7 and band 6 nurse specialists/nurse practitioners.
  • Agree a job plan with the manager to be reviewed annually, including appropriate clinical supervision.
  • Responsible for the service budget in conjunction with Directorate Manager and ADM; ensure KPI data is collected and submitted to commissioners; act as the first point of contact for commissioner queries.
  • Work autonomously, managing a caseload of patients within the specialty while collaborating with the multidisciplinary team; deliver individualised and personalised direct patient care.
  • Assess emergencies in the specialty, interpret information, take appropriate action and lead others to do the same.
  • Advocate for patients to ensure a patient-centred approach and meet NHS plan, NHFD and Best Practice standards.
  • Ensure high-quality clinical care and patient experience, respecting customs and beliefs; engage service users through user groups and open days.
  • Coordinate specialist services within hospital and community settings; liaise with multi-disciplinary colleagues.
  • Develop and run nurse-led clinics; coordinate treatment with medical staff; work autonomously in nurse-led clinics including prescribing
  • Prescribe specific medications and topical agents for dermatological conditions as an independent and supplementary prescriber within competence.
  • Direct, support, encourage and advise clinical teams; promote patient-centred care and maintain supportive relationships with patients and families.
  • Support and enable patients and carers to make informed treatment decisions; promote evidence-based practice and clinical standards to develop the specialist service.
  • Provide professional and clinical leadership and act as a resource for education and clinical expertise; demonstrate expert practice in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clinicians, practitioners and managers; educate and involve patients, carers and relatives; provide psychological support as required.
  • Engage in local, national and international networking to maintain expert knowledge; undertake highly specialist procedures (e.g., minor surgery, PDT, MED and MPD) and lead on clinical pathways including prioritisation of cases.
  • Provide outreach clinical sessions across primary and secondary care; act as autonomous practitioner with judgement and decision making in clinical care.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations regarding drugs, administration and record keeping; document clinical conditions and care plans; lead nurse-led clinics using appropriate protocols.
  • Initiate medication reviews with consultants; liaise with primary and secondary care clinicians as required; ensure services support home management with MDT involvement.
  • Be a contact for patients; offer advice and support to patients, families and carers; develop the Dermatology Service within the team and attend departmental meetings.
  • Maintain concise, accurate and auditable records; dictate and sign letters to GPs and other healthcare professionals; return calls and arrange clinic appointments; work independently and as part of the wider team.
  • Deliver patient care with professionalism and uphold high standards.
Line Management / Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise staff as required, including appraisal and performance management; line manager to band 7 and band 6 nurse specialists/nurse practitioners.
  • Act as team leader when required; coordinate and delegate work; review recruitment and deployment of staff.
  • Authorize equipment usage according to financial instructions; monitor financial resources with Directorate Manager to achieve efficiencies.
  • Manage service changes with financial implications; implement HR processes such as sickness/absence management.
  • Collaborate with ADM/DM to ensure sustainability, capacity and capability; contribute to annual business planning; provide clinical insight into trends and disease prevalence.
  • Influence commissioning decisions and demonstrate achievement of contracted KPIs; manage budgets with Directorate Managers; ensure KPI and CQUIN data are submitted to commissioners on time.
Quality
  • Facilitate a high-quality, cost-effective specialist service through monitoring and audit; lead developments to promote high-quality patient-focused services.
  • Attend and participate in multi-professional team meetings; set and review standards of care; initiate corrective actions; identify unsafe environments and escalate as needed.
Teaching & Training Responsibilities
  • Coordinate development of teaching and education programmes; provide support to patients for self-management; lead development of patient education and information.
  • Liaise with Practice Education Facilitators to develop attachments for students; support nursing colleagues in CPD, peer supervision, and feedback-driven education improvements.
  • Contribute to specialty curriculum development at local/regional level and advise on commissioning of specialty training; assess personal educational needs and keep up to date with NMC requirements.
  • Raise awareness of dermatology conditions through teaching and organizational education; provide supervision to ensure adherence to NMC guidelines for medicines administration.
Research & Audit
  • Monitor standards of care and lead improvements via benchmarking, audit and research; understand and apply evidence-based care.
  • Support data collation for internal and external assessments (quality ward rounds, CQC); lead on Serious Untoward Incidents (SUIs) and patient safety incidents as required; ensure lessons learned are implemented.
  • Attend governance meetings; submit activity data/annual reports; identify and submit research proposals with appropriate approvals; promote nursing research and publish outcomes.
  • Utilize research findings to inform practice and disseminate information to staff; participate in clinical research trials where appropriate; lead and contribute to audit and research within the specialty.
  • Familiar with current clinical research protocol issues; lead reporting of clinical incidents and safety concerns; supervise staff to ensure NMC medicines administration guidelines and Misuse of Drugs Act compliance.
