Working for Greenergy

Commitment to innovation and a drive to do things differently have seen Greenergy grow from a bedroom start-up to become an international fuel supplier and a leading European manufacturer of waste-based renewables.

Today, we supply over 15 billion litres of fuel annually across the UK, Ireland and Canada – managing fuel supply chains from refinery gates to customer sites and managing over 500 deliveries per day. To deliver fuel to our customers, we have a 24/7 in-house haulage operation, Greenergy Flexigrid, made up of over 600 drivers and a fleet of over 200 tankers.

Greenergy owns and operates biodiesel manufacturing plants in England and the Netherlands that process waste oils sourced globally into biodiesel, which is used to displace diesel in road transport.

We aim to be a leading transportation fuel supplier, by integrating traditional and renewable energy solutions.

What will I be doing as a Laboratory Scientist (Chemistry) Apprentice?

Greenergy is pleased to offer you the opportunity to both earn a salary and study towards a nationally recognised qualification through our apprenticeship programme. Within this role, you will be introduced to the core functions of Greenergy’s laboratory operations and will progressively take on responsibilities to develop your skills, knowledge, and capabilities.

You will gain hands‑on experience in monitoring, maintaining, and improving laboratory analytical processes, while building a strong foundation in ISO 17025‑accredited methods, analytical chemistry, and statistical quality control.

Responsibilities
  • Follow EHS procedures to maintain a safe and compliant working environment, and assist in producing and updating safety documentation.
  • Support laboratory investigations, including non‑routine analyses and reviewing anomalous results, providing technical input where needed.
  • Help implement and expand ISO 17025‑accredited methods, ensuring procedures meet required standards.
  • Assist with maintenance of analytical equipment, manage inventory, and liaise with external companies for servicing and calibration.
  • Participate in statistical quality control (SQC) for accredited methods and help extend SQC to other analytical methods, preparing reports and data summaries.
  • Support the laboratory management team in preparing for and conducting internal and external audits to maintain compliance with relevant standards.
Future

There’s no limit to what you can achieve while working with Greenergy. Through ‘on‑the‑job’ training you’ll have the opportunity to learn new skills to provide competency and responsibility in carrying out testing and to help develop your career. At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll achieve a Bachelor of Science (BSci) in Applied Chemical Sciences.

Qualifications

For this position, you’ll need to hold a Level 3 qualification (such as A Levels or equivalent) in Science or a relevant subject, including Maths, Engineering, or Physics.

Ideally, you will also have some laboratory experience, which can be gained through education or other practical work.

In our experience, the most successful apprentices are those who are curious about the sector, open about what they do and don’t yet know, considerate, self‑reflective, and eager to learn the role quickly.

Experience / Fit

Whilst previous experience is great, we’re not just interested in experience and qualifications; we’re looking for someone with the right attitude and aptitude to fit right in at Greenergy.

About you

We’re looking for someone who is focused, careful, and results‑oriented, with good attention to detail to spot issues, record observations accurately, and follow laboratory procedures. The ability to think on your feet is important, as the role involves routine and non‑routine analysis, supporting investigations, and maintaining equipment.

You will have good health and safety awareness and be able to follow strict EHS and laboratory guidelines. You’ll work closely with the team, communicate openly, and ask questions when needed. A curiosity for science and laboratory work, combined with a willingness to develop your technical skills, will help you succeed in this apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship Details

Our Degree Apprenticeships (Level 6) are designed to provide fearless scientists in the making with a head start in their chosen career. Giving you the best of both worlds, you’ll receive a recognised and accredited qualification whilst obtaining hands‑on practical experience.

Over 33 months, you will develop your knowledge and skills in your chosen field to become a leader pushing development, knowledge generation and innovation.

You will be provided with 6 hours per week by your employer to conduct learning and training during working hours. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments).

You’ll be trained by a team of expert tutorials from Tiro as well as an experienced workplace mentor at Greenergy who, together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.

Entry Requirements

There are some minimum requirements you’ll need to meet to do an apprenticeship, these are rules set by the UK Government.

You’ll need to be over 18, not in full time education (at the time of enrolment), have lived in the UK for 3 years and have the right to work in the UK for the full duration of the apprenticeship.

Alongside this you will need to have a minimum of Level 3 qualifications (A-levels, BTECs, or equivalent) and relevant work experience or lab based experience.

Applications and Eligibility

Please note: applicants who already hold a degree or higher qualification in Chemistry or a related subject are not eligible, as apprenticeship funding cannot be used for those who already hold a higher‑level qualification in the subject area.
