Job description
Overview

We want you to #JOINTHEREBELLION!

For 30 years we’ve been creating incredible video games at our multiple studios. Rebellion is more than just games—we have our own film studio, we create board games, publish books, and through 2000AD publish comics and graphic novels such as Judge Dredd.

We’re looking for a Junior VFX Artist who is looking to continue or start their career in games and join a passionate and growing VFX team to work on an exciting new large-scale project, crafted by a seasoned team renowned for developing exceptional shooters.

The VFX team is responsible for all visual effects developed in Rebellion’s games. Not only particle effects, but screen post effects, material effects, mesh destruction effects and UI effects, developed in Rebellion’s proprietary engine “Asura”.

Responsibilities
  • Build real-time particle effects, guided and supported by Senior and Lead artists.
  • Create spritesheets and flipbooks and prepare particle textures for use in-engine.
  • Implement effects in the game engine while following established naming conventions, folder structures, and performance budgets.
  • Refine and optimise your work, bug-fixing, adjusting overdraw, spawn rates, and LODs to keep effects performant and polished.
  • Collaborate closely with design, code, and art teams to deliver effects that enhance both gameplay and player experience.
  • Capture reference, document your process, and help maintain clean, up-to-date effect libraries.
Location and arrangements

This exciting opportunity can be based out of any of our studios in Oxford or Warwick, offering flexibility, collaboration, and the chance to work with a world-class team! We can provide a relocation package, including moving assistance, temporary accommodation, and full support to ensure a smooth transition to your new environment.

We believe in the power of face-to-face collaboration and encourage working from our Oxford headquarters. However, we understand that flexibility matters, so we’re open to discussing hybrid options based on individual needs.

Requirements
  • A strong real-time VFX portfolio that showcases clear, well-timed, and visually compelling effects.
  • Confident with tools such as Blender, Photoshop, Substance, and After Effects (or equivalent software).
  • A strong understanding of particle system fundamentals and texture creation workflows for games.
  • Familiarity with simulation tools like Houdini and Embergen (or similar) for generating flipbook assets.
  • Knowledge of 2D particle texture creation techniques and how to apply them effectively in real-time effects.
  • Ability to translate concept art and reference into polished, performant particle effects that enhance gameplay.
  • Any extra experience, whether from game jams, mods, internships, or professional projects, as well as familiarity with source control systems, will be seen as a valuable bonus
Benefits

We offer an extensive benefits package to our team including:

  • 22 days holidays + Christmas closure (typically 4 days) & Bank holidays (increasing with service at 5 years – one day each year until you reach 31 days)
  • Private Medical Insurance, healthcare cash plan, including dental and Vision
  • Life Assurance, Income Protection & Critical Illness Cover
  • Enhanced Family Leave
  • Interest Free, Tax-Free loans
  • Enhanced Pension Scheme
  • EAP a range of Mental Health and Wellbeing Support
  • Plus loads more… including a wide range of discounts, freebies, and social events!
