Qualifications

Overview

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Junior Mechanical Design Engineer interested in decarbonisation projects to join our Carbon Shift business unit.

Our Carbon Shift consulting business focuses on delivering realisable climate action and net zero plans, supported by delivery capability in heat decarbonisation, regeneration, Facilities Management, Project delivery, EVs, smart buildings and renewables. Carbon Shift has developed strong expertise and client bases around net zero and energy transition and is expanding to offer solutions to broader climate adaptation and resilience challenges.

Responsibilities
  • Support the development of renewable heat and thermal energy efficiency projects, focusing on engineering and design development of commercial heat pump applications, HVAC systems improvements and controls.
  • Prepare mechanical design solutions for retrofit decarbonisation projects, new-build energy centres and heat networks, taking RIBA 1 concepts to RIBA 4 technical design.
  • Prepare design models using proprietary design software such as AutoCAD, REVIT and Navisworks.
  • Prepare thermal energy simulation models using software such as IES VE, Hysopt and EnergyPRO.
  • Prepare calculations and engineering analyses to validate simulation models and confirm systems design requirements and performances.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary design team with electrical, structural/civil, architectural, energy and specialist designers to produce coordinated designs.
  • Support market research to identify new and emerging technology/design innovations and assess their suitability for projects.
  • Support technical options appraisals to qualify/quantify best available techniques.
  • Prepare design/functional specifications and contribute to tender scopes.
  • Lead or contribute to Design Stage Reports and related customer-facing documents.
  • Undertake Designer Risk Assessments to identify and minimise health, safety and environmental risks associated with designs.
  • Understand and adhere to applicable statutory, regulatory and contractual requirements in design processes and outputs, with support from colleagues.
  • Understand and account for physical and environmental constraints in design processes and outputs, with support from colleagues.
  • Collaborate with BIM specialists to provide modelling/design information where applicable.
  • Undertake non-invasive engineering surveys to support design processes and interpret survey information for integration into designs.
  • Provide technical support during construction and commissioning phases.
Qualifications & Skills
  • A good level of understanding of building services (mechanical) design.
  • Good knowledge of British Standards, design guides and the Building Regulations.
  • Aware of health and safety and CDM regulations.
  • Competent in AutoCAD and REVIT; proficient with standard Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
  • Strong understanding of legislation, regulations and standards applicable to HVAC design, ideally related to low-carbon heating/cooling.
  • Aware of environmental, cultural and health and safety issues in system design.
  • Able to prepare draft specifications, stage reports and tender documentation.
  • Understanding of environmental factors affecting mechanical and electrical design.
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Experience or awareness of HVAC control integration and control strategies.
