This position requires a candidate with extensive experience working on STM journals, who fully understands the demands of producing content for deadline-driven weekly publications. The successful individual must consistently deliver work that meets the highest standards of quality, speed, accuracy, and strict adherence to detailed house style guidelines.
Primarily focused on technical and scientific illustration, this role follows established style conventions and occasionally involves creative tasks, provided they remain within the bounds of house style. We are seeking someone capable of producing high-quality work from the outset; therefore, this is not a trainee position.
Candidates with backgrounds in graphic design, freehand illustration, or animation will not be suitable for this role.
To redraw author-supplied material, including general diagrams, graphs, maps, CONSORT diagrams, charts, timelines, forest plots, and cellular/anatomical illustrations into house style, working to tight deadlines in order to ensure the on-time publication of content
Carry out editorial/author revisions and corrections to illustrations in a timely and efficient manner whilst safeguarding in-house style and conventions
Montage, resize, crop, retouch, and colour-correct photographs on a fast turnaround ad hoc daily basis
Manage workflow using our content management system (WoodWing Studio) and in-house Editorial Management system
Liaise with Illustration, Editorial and other Production staff as when appropriate
Be proactive in formulating fast and innovative solutions regarding illustrations when required
Training and advising other production personnel, freelancers, and editorial staff on house style and illustration policy
Extensive skills in Adobe Illustrator in producing precise, accurate, and consistently high-quality work
Excellent Adobe Photoshop skills and experience of photo retouching and colour-correction for 4-colour reproduction as well as preparing images for online use
Knowledge of using Adobe Acrobat to convert and manipulate files
Working knowledge of InDesign and Microsoft office
Able to create complex illustrations from scratch using author-supplied files as source material
Able to follow and interpret author and editor instructions and to be able to make changes to illustrations quickly and efficiently.
Able to work well under pressure in a weekly/monthly publishing environment and to be able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances whilst handling multiple pieces of work
Able to communicate effectively and work as part of a team as well as working on own initiative
